2025 Oscars: ‘Emilia Pérez’ Dominates the Shortlists with 6, ‘Wicked,’ Alien: Romulus,’ ‘Gladiator II’ Among Top Mentions

AMPAS, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, today revealed the shortlists in 10 categories: Documentary Feature Film, Documentary Short Film, International Feature Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Score), Music (Original Song), Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Sound and Visual Effects.

Emilia Pérez led with six mentions: International Feature Film, Original Score, two in Original Song, Makeup and Hairstyling and Sound. Wicked was next with four, showing up in Original Score, Makeup and Hairstyling, Sound and Visual Effects.

Alien: Romulus and Gladiator II fared well with three mentions apiece and one title found itself across two feature categories: Mati Diop’s Dahomey, representing Senegal for International Feature Film and also in Documentary Feature.

The day didn’t come without its shocking snubs, too. Alex Garland’s Civil War missing from the sound shortlist was a surprise. As was Oscar winner Jon Batiste not making the original score cut for Saturday Night, while titles like The Six Triple Eight, Blink Twice and The Fire Inside made it in. But the biggest donut of the day goes to Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, getting completely blanked across the board: score, sound, makeup, visual effects. Nothing.

Nominations voting begins on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, and concludes on Sunday, January 12, 2025.

Nominations for the 97th Academy Awards will be announced on Friday, January 17, 2025.

The 97th Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood and will be televised live on ABC, streamed live on Hulu and airs live in more than 200 territories worldwide.

In the nominations round, Academy members from all branches are invited to opt in to participate and must view all 15 shortlisted films to vote.
