21st Visual Effects Society (VES) nominations: ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ leads with record-breaking 14 nods

James Cameron’s 2022 blockbuster Avatar: The Way of Water has earned a record-breaking 14 nominations from the Visual Effects Society (VES), more than any film, television show or single project in the guild’s history.

Joining the film in the top category of Outstanding VFX in a Photoreal Feature are Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, Jurassic World: Dominion, The Batman and Top Gun: Maverick, all of which are on the Oscar shortlist for VFX. Nominees in the category for supporting VFX are Death on the Nile, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, The Fabelmans, The Gray Man, The Pale Blue Eye and Thirteen Lives, only the last of which is on the Oscar shortlist.

Two Marvel hits that made the Oscar shortlist cut fared poorly today as Black Panther: Wakanda Forever earned just one nomination, for Effects Simulation, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was snubbed entirely. The final two VFX Oscar shortlisted films, All Quiet On the Western Front and Nope, also failed to earn any nominations.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio is out in front for the animated contenders, with six nominations including one for Outstanding VFX in an Animated Feature but ultimately failed to make the Oscar shortlist. In television, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power topped the list with seven nominations including one for Outstanding VFX in a Photoreal Episode.

The 21st VES Awards will be held live on February 15 at a ceremony at the Beverly Hilton. As previously announced, Gale Anne Hurd will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award during the ceremony.
