Black Panther, the billion dollar juggernaut comic book blockbuster has won Outstanding Performance By a Cast in a Motion Picture at the 25th Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards. The film also won for its Stunt Ensemble and is nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Picture.
“To be young, gifted & black we know what it’s like to be told there isn’t a place for you to be featured on. And that was what we went to work with every day. Not because of awards season or $1 billion but because we knew we had something special,” said star Chadwick Boseman, accepting the award on behalf of the film’s cast.
The event is being hosted by SAG-award winning actress Megan Mullally (Will & Grace).
A Star Is Born entered the night as the most nominated film with four but went home empty-handed.
Glenn Close (The Wife) continued her awards run with her pickup here, adding to her Golden Globe and Critics Choice wins.
Rami Malek won Male Actor in a Leading Role in a Motion Picture for Bohemian Rhapsody. He was previously nominated for his breakthrough performance on the television series Mr. Robot.
Emily Blunt defied odds to win Female Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture for A Quiet Place. This is her first SAG win yet she was not nominated for the Oscar for this role and this marks the first time in SAG history that the winner here was not. Three of her competitors here, Amy Adams, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz are.
Mahershala Ali (Green Book) won the award for Male Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture. This is Ali’s second individual SAG win for Motion Pictures after his win for Moonlight (he also has a cast win for Hidden Figures). He is the first supporting male winner in SAG’s 25-year history to do so.
This Is Us won Ensemble in a Drama Series for the second year in a row. Jason Bateman (Ozark) and Sandra Oh (Killing Eve) picked up individual acting wins.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel completely dominated the comedy awards, winning all three prizes, including Outstanding Ensemble in a Comedy Series. Tony Shalhoub won Male Actor in a Comedy Series, his third SAG award (his previous wins were for Monk). Rachel Brosnahan triumphed in Female Actor in a Comedy Series and has now won the SAG, Emmy, Golden Globe, Critics Choice and TCA for her role in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
Tom Hanks presented Alan Alda with the Life Achievement Award.
