Two of Netflix’s signature dramas, The Crown and Ozark, led the 26th Critics’ Choice Awards TV nominations announced today, each earning six mentions, including Best Drama Series. The streamer led overall with 26 nominations.
Joining them in that category were Better Call Saul, The Good Fight, Lovecraft Country, The Mandalorian, Perry Mason and This Is Us. The Crown, Ozark and Lovecraft Country also earned nominations in every acting category.
In comedy, recent Emmy champ Schitt’s Creek will take its final season up against freshman hits like Ted Lasso from Apple TV+ and The Flight Attendant from HBO Max. They’re joined in the Best Comedy Series category by Better Things, Mom, Pen15, Ramy and What We Do In the Shadows, the latter of which earned four acting nominations for its cast after its Emmy breakthrough second season earned the show writing and series nods.
In the ever-growing ‘is it TV or a movie’ fight, Small Axe, Sylvie’s Love and Hamilton all earned television nominations today, which will preclude them from competing in the film categories for Critics’ Choice. Small Axe, a series of five films directed by Academy Award winner Steve McQueen for Amazon Prime Video, has enjoyed a number of critics’ wins for film this season but was positioned for awards season for television. Hamilton will compete at the Golden Globes as a film but for SAG and elsewhere at TV.
The TV Movie and Limited Series categories were a grab bag of some previous Emmy favorites from last season like Mrs. America, Unorthodox and Normal People with a rush of summer, fall and winter content like I May Destroy You, The Queen’s Gambit and The Undoing. Shockingly, Nicole Kidman found herself snubbed for The Undoing while her co-stars Hugh Grant and Donald Sutherland made the cut. Similarly, Ethan Hawke (The Good Lord Bird) found himself on the outside while his co-stars, Daveed Diggs and Joshua Caleb Johnson, were nominated.
The 26th annual Critics’ Choice Awards show will air on Sunday, March 7 at 7pm ET on The CW (film nominees will be announced on February 7) and once again be hosted by Taye Diggs.
