27th Capri Hollywood International Film Festival winners: ‘Elvis’ dominates with eight wins including Best Picture and Best Director

Baz Luhrmann’s splashy biopic Elvis reigned king at the 27th Capri Hollywood Fest awards, winning eight prizes including Best Picture, Best Director, Makeup and Hairstyling and Production Design. Curiously, star Austin Butler didn’t win Best Actor as the group chose Brendan Fraser for his comeback performance in The Whale. The event was held at the Mercandante Theatre in Naples, Italy during the Gala sponsored by Intesa Sanpaolo, Terna and Givova: Honoring Cinema Masters.

Netflix won nine Capri Awards across its slate of films including Ana de Armas winning Best Actress for Blonde, Eddie Redmayne winning Best Supporting Actor for The Good Nurse, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio for Best Animation, Glass Onion for Adapted Screenplay and Ensemble, All Quiet in the Western Front for Best International Feature and Alejandro G. Iñárritu winning the Capri Visionary Award for Bardo.

Top Gun: Maverick earned three Capri Awards, Angela Bassett won Best Supporting Actress for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Everything Everywhere All at Once’ won Best Original Screenplay; and Diane Warren’s “Applause” is the Best Song from the film Tell It Like a Woman.

Ruben Östlund was named European Director of the Year for Triangle of Sadness while Best European Actors of the Year were Riccardo Scamarcio (Caravaggio’s Shadow) and Emma Thompson (Good Luck to You, Leo Grande).

Cosimo Gomez (My Name is Vendetta) Francesco Carrozzini and Laura Samani were honored as the European Breakout Directors of the Year as well as Andrea Scarduzio (to be seen soon in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1 and The Equalizer 3) and Francesca Tizzano (Lamborghini and the upcoming Double Soul) were honored as the Breakout Actors of the Year.

Capri Hollywood – The International Festival was founded in 1995 by producer Pascal Vicedomini and organized in association with Capri in the World Institute and calls itself the ‘bridge’ festival connecting the Italian and Global movie industries is organized under the patronage of the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly and with the participation of RS Productions, Nuovo Imaie and Isaia.

Winners were selected by this year’s festival board which includes its Honorary President Tony Renis (Golden Globe winner and Oscar-nominated music producer) along with prominent international members like British director Terry Gilliam; Oscar winners Gianni Quaranta, Alessandro Bertolazzi; actors Franco Nero, Remo Girone, Daniel McVicar, and Sebastian Harrison; Italian screenwriter Enrico Vanzina and directors Valerio Esposito and Stefano Reali. Other noted voters were Israeli musicians’ Noa and Gil Dor; U.S. soul singer Nicole Slack Jones; French fashion sesigner Christophe Guillarme.
