28th Critics’ Choice Awards: ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ wins Best Picture; ‘Better Call Saul,’ ‘Abbott Elementary’ take TV prizes

The 28th Critics Choice Awards have chosen Everything Everywhere All At Once as Best Picture of 2022, also awarding the film Best Director (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert), Best Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan), Original Screenplay and Best Editing. The film was nominated for a record-tying 14 nominations.

Cate Blanchett won Best Actress for her performance in TÁR, Brendan Fraser took his first televised award of the season with his Best Actor win for The Whale and Angela Bassett won Supporting Actress for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Blanchett, Quan and Bassett all repeated their Golden Globe wins from Sunday, where Best Actor was split between Austin Butler for Elvis (in drama) and Colin Farrell for The Banshees of Inisherin (in musical or comedy). Steven Spielberg and The Fabelmans had won the director and best picture prizes at the Globes but won just a single award of its 11 nominations, Gabriel LaBelle as Best Young Actor/Actress. The Banshees of Insherin, which went into the night with eight nominations, went home empty handed.

The event was held live at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles and hosted by comedian Chelsea Handler for the first time.

ABC’s Abbott Elementary led the television nominations with six and won two, for Best Comedy Series and Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, Sheryl Lee Ralph. The final season of AMC’s Better Call Saul made a good haul with wins for Best Drama Series, Best Actor (Bob Odenkirk) and Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series (Giancarlo Esposito). In the Limited Series categories, the top winners were The Dropout and its star Amanda Seyfried and Weird: The Al Yankovic Story and its star, Daniel Radcliffe.

The CCA made the choice of combining the supporting categories for television in the same announcement, with presenters reading both names at the same time and inviting both the winning actor and actress to the stage. While it proved to be the time-saver intended (the show ended exactly on time) it was given a lashing by presenter Seth Rogen: “Why did you do that? It couldn’t have cost much, it’s on the CW at 4pm!”

Jeff Bridges, who missed the Golden Globes earlier this week due to the storms in Southern California, received the Lifetime Achievement Award, which was presented by his The Big Lebowski co-star John Goodman.

Singer, songwriter, producer, performer and actor Janelle Monáe, a nominee tonight in supporting actress for Glass Onion and a winner as a part of its ensemble, will receive the group’s 7th SeeHer Award from her Glass Onion co-star Kate Hudson.

The SeeHer Award honors a woman who advocates for gender equality, portrays characters with authenticity, defies stereotypes and pushes boundaries. SeeHer is the leading global movement for accurate portrayals of women and girls in media. A global collective of marketers, media organizations and industry influencers, SeeHer is committed to creating gender-bias-free advertising and media. Previous award recipients are Viola Davis (2017), Gal Gadot (2018), Claire Foy (2019), Kristen Bell (2020), Zendaya (2021), and Halle Berry (2022).
