28th Critics’ Choice nominations: ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ leads with 14, followed by ‘The Fabelmans’
The 28th Critics’ Choice Association (CCA) announced their nominations for the best in film for 2022 and The Daniels’ Everything Everywhere All At Once continued its reign with a field-best 14 nods including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and two in Best Supporting Actress.
The A24 sci-fi hit from March grossed over $100M worldwide, making it the biggest hit in A24’s history and has lasted all year to remain a major awards contender.
Next was Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans with 11 nominations, Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin with 9 and Damien Chazelle’s Babylon with 8. Two Best Picture nominees tied with 7 apiece, Ba Luhrmann’s Elvis and Todd Field’s TÁR, while four tied with six each: James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water, Rian Johnson’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Joseph Kosinski’s Top Gun: Maverick and Sarah Polley’s Women Talking. Rounding out the group’s 11 Best Picture spots was the (big) little Indian film that could, S.S. Rajamouli’s RRR. There are eleven Best Picture nominees this year due to an exact tie, according to the org.
The new, expanded lineup of Best Director to 10 included everyone in BP except Kosinski and Johnson, who was replaced by The Woman King‘s Gina Prince-Bythewood.
Lead actor competitors will be Austin Butler for Elvis, Tom Cruise for Top Gun: Maverick, Colin Farrell for The Banshees of Inisherin, Brendan Fraser for The Whale, Paul Mescal for Aftersun and Bill Nighy for Living.
Lead actress is Cate Blanchett for TÁR, Viola Davis for The Woman King, Danielle Deadwyler for Till, Margot Robbie for Babylon, Michelle Williams for The Fabelmans and Michelle Yeoh for Everything Everywhere All At Once.
“We are so proud to be recognizing this incredible group of films and the people who made them possible,” said Critics Choice Association CEO Joey Berlin. “This recognition comes from a diverse group of more than 600 critics and entertainment reporters who share their opinions about film and television with millions of people every day, all year long. Our collective opinion about the year’s finest achievements is truly meaningful to the creative community.”
A few big misses this morning included Hong Chau in supporting actress for The Whale, Dolly De Leon in supporting actress in Triangle of Sadness (the film only got one nod, for comedy film), Diego Calva and Brad Pitt in lead and supporting, respectively, for Babylon and She Said with just a single nomination for adapted screenplay.
As previously announced, Jeff Bridges will receive the Critics Choice Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s ceremony. On the television side, ABC’s Abbott Elementary leads CCA nominations with six nods including best comedy series followed by AMC’s Better Call Saul with five.
Winners will be revealed at the 28th Annual Critics’ Choice Awards on Sunday, January 15, 2023 live on The CW and hosted by Chelsea Handler. Here is the full list of nominations.
