29th Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards nominations: ‘The Banshees of Inisherin,’ ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ lead record-tying film nods; Netflix picks up live show

The nominations for the 29th Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards were announced this morning via Instagram, and not without some big surprises and snubs.

The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All At Once topped the motion picture list with a record-tying five nominations apiece. Both received nods for their ensembles while Banshees earned a lead actor nomination for Colin Farrell, two in supporting actor (Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan) and one for supporting actress (Kerry Condon). EEAAO was the flip side with a lead actress nod for Golden Globe winner Michelle Yeoh, two supporting actress mentions (Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu) and one for supporting actor (Golden Globe winner Ke Huy Quan). Previous films to reach that number were 1998’s Shakespeare in Love, 2002’s Chicago, and 2008’s Doubt. Shakespeare in Love and Chicago went on to win for their ensemble and lead actress (plus supporting actress for Chicago) and both took it all the way to the Best Picture Oscar.

Babylon and Women Talking received just one nomination apiece, in the outstanding cast category, making for some big name snubs. Babylon’s Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt didn’t make the individual cut, nor did anyone from Women Talking. While Golden Globe Best Picture winner The Fabelmans earned an ensemble nomination and one for Paul Dano, Oscar favorite Michelle Williams, who positioned herself in a lead actress campaign, did not. The Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role nominees were Cate Blanchett (TÁR), Viola Davis (The Woman King), Ana de Armas (Blonde), Danielle Deadwyler (Till) and Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All At Once). Netflix’s Glass Onion surprised with zero nods today but the streamer’s campaign for Adam Sandler paid off as he earned a nomination for his basketball dramedy Hustle.

The final season of Ozark led the television nominations with four: one for its cast and three individual nods for Jason Bateman, Laura Linney and Julia Garner. Better Call Saul, Barry and Only Murders in the Building earned three each.

But another piece of news might have usurped the nomination announcement. An hour before Ashley Park (Emily in Paris) and Haley Lu Richardson (The White Lotus) revealed them on Instagram live, it was announced that The Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will stream live on Netflix globally beginning in 2024 thanks to a new multi-year partnership between Netflix and the SAG Awards. TNT, the former home of The SAG Awards for 25 years, ditched the show as a part of the Discovery+ buyout of Warner Bros and its properties, including TNT. With this new deal in place, Netflix has agreed to stream this year’s show on Netflix’s YouTube channel, YouTube.com/Netflix, and will tap into their broad array of social media channels to promote the event.  The ceremony will be presented by SAG-AFTRA with Screen Actors Guild Awards, LLC and executive produced by Jon Brockett and produced by Avalon Harbor Entertainment.

The SAG Awards will be broadcast live on Netflix’s YouTube channel, YouTube.com/Netflix, Sunday, February 26 at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT from the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles.

Here is the full list of nominations.
