3 of the best true-story films on Amazon Prime

There are so many different genres of film that you could choose from that sometimes it becomes impossible to decide what you want to watch. With that said, what could be more exciting and fascinating than a film based on something that happened in real life. It’s often said that the truth can be stranger than fiction and these fantastical tales that are all based on real-life events, certainly seem to echo that sentiment. Rounders

Matt Damon and Edward Norton star in this 1998 film about high stakes poker. Mike McDermott (played by Matt Damon) must help Lester Murphy (Edward Norton) pay back the loan shark that he owes money to. This film is a bit of a white-knuckle ride and is said to be based on the life of based on Norm Macdonald. Whether it is or not, remains to be seen.

Rounders is certainly thrilling from beginning to end, but we can’t help but wonder if Matt Damon might have been a little wiser choosing to play poker online instead of heading directly into the underworld. As you may have guessed underground card rings are unregulated. A film based on a film is always a risky business, but it’s even riskier when the proposed film is based on a film that was unanimously voted a failure. The Disaster Artist follows the story of the director behind the cult classic, but ultimate flop, The Room.

This film features forgotten scenes, nonsensical dialogue and above all some truly terrible acting. However, there’s something about it that a small group of people absolutely loved. It was this that made James Franco fall in love with Tommy Wiseau, the actual director and main character. So, there follows this brilliant film called The Disaster Artist.

If you’ve never seen The Room before then it’s well worth taking the time to watch that film first and properly understand who the characters are, particularly Tommy Wiseau. If you have seen The Room before then we can’t believe you’ve had four years to watch The Disaster Artist and still haven’t got around to it yet. Now is your chance!

Zodiac

We are living in an age of the True Crime obsessed, so it would be crazy to get to the end of the list without mentioning a true crime story. Zodiac was released in 2007 and stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Robert Downey Jr. as two newspaper reporters who become determined to get to the bottom of a series of harrowing murders in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Along the way, they grapple with confusing and cryptic messages, the lack of cooperation from the police department, but ultimately a dangerous killer. This film will suit those who love psychological thrillers, as the case really begins to take a toll on the reporters. They find themselves in increasingly difficult situations but can’t stop chasing this deadly individual.

At more than two and a half hours long, this is the perfect film if you’ve got a totally empty schedule for the evening, but be warned, you might not want to watch it if you’re home alone! Even if the film was entirely a work of fiction it would be pretty scary, but knowing it was based on a true story might make it too much for nervous viewers.
