31st Screen Actors Guild Awards Winners: ‘Conclave,’ ‘Only Murders in the Building,’ Timothée Chalamet and Demi Moore

Conclave, Timothée Chalamet and Demi Moore led the motion picture winners of the 31st Screen Actors Guild Awards, held tonight live on Netflix from the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall in Los Angeles and hosted once again by SAG-nominee Kristen Bell.

After earning a Critics Choice win for ensemble, as well as the majority of ensemble awards from individual regional critics and the BAFTA for Best Film, the papal thriller Conclave came out on top at SAG, winning the award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in Motion Picture, joining recent winners like Oppenheimer, Everything Everywhere All At Once, CODA, The Trial of the Chicago 7. All but Trial went on to win Best Picture at the Oscars, but each film also won an individual SAG acting award as well as an acting Oscar in their respective years.

Timothée Chalamet won for his performance as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, his only major precursor win after Adrien Brody (The Brutalist) had secured the Golden Globe, Critics Choice and BAFTA. In his speech, Chalamet mentioned he wanted to be thought of alongside Marlon Brando as one of “the greats.” “We’re in a subjective business but the truth is I’m really in pursuit of greatness,” he said. “I know people don’t usually talk like that, but I want to be one of the greats. I’m inspired by the greats. I’m inspired by the greats here tonight. I’m as inspired by Daniel Day-Lewis, Marlon Brando and Viola Davis, as I am by Michael Jordan, Michael Phelps, and I want to be up there.” At 29, Chalamet is now the youngest lead actor SAG winner for feature film.

Demi Moore captured the Actor for her comeback role in The Substance, tackling an aging actresses being replaced by a younger version through the lens of horror from writer/director Coralie Fargeat. Moore recalled her decades-long career, some of which was highlighted in the ‘Soap Starts’ clip reel during the show, thanking everyone in the room whose work inspired her to keep going when she was younger. “That little girl who didn’t believe in herself,” Moore said, then paused. “The words are kind of beyond me, so I’m just gonna have to say thank you.” Moore now has the Golden Globe, Critics Choice and SAG, while Mikey Madison (Anora) earned the BAFTA last week.

On Anora, which went home empty-handed tonight, it joins the likes of 2005’s Brokeback Mountain and 2009’s The Hurt Locker as films that won DGA, PGA and WGA then lost all SAG bids. Brokeback Mountain fell short of Oscar’s Best Picture that year to Crash (the SAG winner) but The Hurt Locker prevailed, without an acting win.

Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain) and Zoe Saldaña (Emilia Pérez) continued their sweeps in the supporting races, with both earning the Golden Globe, Critics Choice, BAFTA and now SAG entering next weekend’s Oscars.

Wicked was the biggest loser of the night, leading the motion picture nominees with five: stunt performance, supporting actor (Jonathan Bailey), supporting actress (Ariana Grande-Butera), lead actress (Cynthia Erivo) and for the cast and winning zero. It joins 2022’s The Banshees of Inisherin as the only films to earn five SAG nominations and lose them all.

In television, Shōgun led with five and won four, as one of its categories had two nominees, with individual wins for Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada as well as the cast and stunt ensemble. SAG said ‘No, chef!’ to The Bear as it turned four nominations into four losses while Baby Reindeer stars Richard Gadd and Jessica Gunning continued their awards domination that began at the Emmys last September. Only Murders in the Building surprised with two big ones; for Martin Short for his leading role (he was unable to attend due to catching COVID at the SNL50 event) and for ensemble cast for a comedy series. Colin Farrell won for his titular role in The Penguin and Jean Smart (Hacks) continued her steamroll of wins for lead comedy actress.

Jane Fonda is set to receive the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award, presented by Julia Louis-Dreyfus. The fiery 87-year old’s speech was a roller coaster of rousing to confounding before sticking the landing with poignant and direct commentary on the current dark state of politics. “What we, actors, create is empathy. Our job is to understand another human being so profoundly that we can touch their souls,” said Fonda. “And make no mistake, empathy is not weak or woke. By the way, woke just means you give a damn about other people.”

Nominees – voted on by their respective film and television nominating committees – were announced on Jan. 8, 2025. The two nominating panels were each composed of 2,500 randomly selected SAG-AFTRA members from across the United States. Final voting opened to 118,000+ SAG-AFTRA members in good standing on Jan. 15 and balloting closed on Feb. 21. Integrity Voting Systems, the Awards’ official election firm, sealed the results until they were announced live during the 31st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Erik Anderson
