33rd Camerimage Lineup: ‘Hamnet,’ F1,’ ‘Sinners,’ ‘Sound of Falling’ and More

The 33rd EnergaCamerimage Film Festival has unveiled this year’s lineup for the Golden Frog, honoring the best in cinematography in film where F1: The Movie, Hamnet, Sinners and Sound of Falling are among the competing films. The festival will take place from November 15-22 in Toruń, Poland.
Also in competition will be James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic from last year, A Complete Unknown, lensed by Phedon Papamichael; Kathryn Bigelow’s nuclear thriller A House of Dynamite, shot by Barry Ackroyd; James Vanderbilt’s WWII drama Nuremberg, photographed by Dariusz Wolski, and Scott Cooper’s Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere, filmed by Masanobu Takayanagi.
Among the European titles in competition are Chopin, a Sonata in Paris by Michał Kwieciński, shot by Michał Sobociński; Mother by Teona Strugar Mitevska, with cinematography by Virginie Saint Martin; 12 Paintings of Enslavement by Lech Majewski, co-shot with Paweł Tybora; Franz by Agnieszka Holland, lensed by Tomasz Naumiuk; and Late Shift by Petra Biondina Volpe, shot by Judith Kaufmann.
Of the 13 competition titles, only three female cinematographers are represented: Autumn Durald Arkapaw for Sinners, Virginie Saint Martin for Mother and Judith Kaufmann for Late Shift.
Last year’s Camerimage was mired in controversy after festival founder Marek Żydowicz published an Op-Ed that argued that admitting the work of more female cinematographers would mean compromising on artistic quality. The piece was in response to a petition from Women in Cinematography, an international union representing female directors of photography, which called on the festival to better support the work of women cinematographers.
Director Steve McQueen, who was set to open the 2024 festival with Blitz, and receive the director award, declined to attend, citing Żydowicz’s Op-Ed. French director Coralie Fargeat, in protest, pulled her film The Substance from the festival.
At last year’s Cameraimage, the winners were The Girl with the Needle – Michał Dymek (Golden Frog), The Brutalist – Lol Crawley (Silver Frog) and Emilia Pérez – Paul Guilhaume (Bronze Frog). The Brutalist and Emilia Pérez were both Oscar-nominated for their cinematography with The Brutalist winning the Academy Award.
