35th GLAAD Media Awards: David Archuleta, ‘Bottoms,’ ‘Yellowjackets’ Take Top Prizes

GLAAD, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, revealed winners of its 35th GLAAD Media Awards last night, honoring 2023 films, television shows, video games, musicians and works of journalism that fairly, accurately and inclusively represent the LGBTQ+ community and issues relevant to the community.

Emma Seligman’s raucous comedic satire Bottoms, starring Rachel Sennott, Ayo Edebiri and Nicholas Galitzine, was named Outstanding Film that featured a wide release and Monica, starring trans actress and activist Trace Lysette, was named Outstanding Film with a limited theatrical release. The show was hosted by actor and comedian Wayne Brady. The Let’s Make a Deal host came out as pansexual last August.

In television, Yellowjackets was named Outstanding Drama Series while Ted Lasso, which featured a gay footballer storyline in its final season, scooped up the Outstanding Comedy award.

Mean Girls star Renée Rapp was named Outstanding Music Artist and season 7 American Idol runner-up David Archuleta, who is in the middle of a career resurgence, was named Outstanding Breakthrough Artist.

After an introduction by legendary Chicago drag performer Chili Pepper and celebrity host Paolo Presta, Oprah Winfrey received the Vanguard Award. Emmy-winning television star Niecy Nash-Betts received the Stephen F. Kolzak Award, which was presented by Sharon Stone.

Since its inception in 1990, the GLAAD Media Awards have grown to be the most visible annual LGBTQ awards show in the world, sending powerful messages of acceptance to audiences globally.

The remaining winners, including in the journalism categories as well as Outstanding New Series and Outstanding Film – Streaming Or TV, will be announced at GLAAD’s New York Ceremony on May 11. Here is the complete list of winner’s from last night’s ceremony.
