36th Producers Guild (PGA) Awards: ‘Anora’ Wins Top Film Honor
The 36th PGA Awards were held tonight at a ceremony at the Fairmont Century Plaza where the top honor of the night, the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, was awarded to Anora.
After walking away empty handed last month at the Golden Globes, Neon’s Palme d’Or winner has put itself in the driver’s seat to win Best Picture after winning not only the PGA tonight, but also winning the DGA award for Best Director for Sean Baker this weekend. While there is still plenty of time left for other films in the race to make up ground, the PGA and DGA wins for tonight are a clear signal from the industry that the passion is strong for Anora.
Since the era of the Oscar Best Picture and PGA expanded lineups, the two have matched up 11 out of 14 times, including the last four years in a row. 2015’s The Big Short won PGA but lost Best Picture to Spotlight, 2016’s La La Land lost to Moonlight and 1917 lost to 2019’s Parasite. 2013 provided the first ever tie at PGA between 12 Years a Slave and Gravity, with the former going on to a Best Picture Oscar win and the latter being the Best Director winner that year. The Producers Guild uses the same preferential ballot that the Oscars use for Best Picture, which favors consensus over a simple majority vote.
The PGA and Oscar Best Picture aligned 8/10 this year after going 10/10 for the first time ever last year. PGA nominees A Real Pain and September 5 were subbed out for the Brazilian International Feature Film entry I’m Still Here and Nickel Boys.
In response to the devastating fires in January, the Producers Guild announced a partnership with the Entertainment Community Fund to establish a dedicated fund supporting producers of film, television and emerging media affected by the fires. The Guild is contributing a portion of the net proceeds from the Producers Guild Awards to the fund. In addition to the Guild’s contribution, members are also donating. Together, $300,000 has already been committed.
The Wild Robot took home the prize for Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures, while Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story won Outstanding Producer of Documentary Theatrical Motion Pictures.
In television, Shōgun took home the prize for Outstanding Producer of Episodic Television, Drama, while Hacks won Outstanding Producer of Episodic Television, Comedy. Baby Reindeer continued its award season dominance with a win for Outstanding Producer of Limited or Anthology Series Television. Saturday Night Live recieved the win for Outstanding Producer of Live Entertainment, Variety, Sketch, Standup & Talk Television, while The Traitors won Outstanding Producer of Game & Competition Television.
Sesame Street won the statuette for Best Children’s Program, its 13th PGA win overall. The Best Sports Program winner was Simone Biles Rising, the Netflix show chronicling the superstar’s withdrawal from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics due to her mental health.
Honorees this year included Chris Meledandri (David O. Selznick Achievement Award in Theatrical Motion Pictures), Dana Walden (Milestone Award), and Taika Waititi (Norman Lear Achievement Award in Television).
The Trailblazer Award, sponsored by Delta Airlines, was awarded posthumously to legendary producers Lynda Obst (Sleepless in Seattle, The Fisher King, Contact, Interstellar, How to Lose A Guy in 10 Days) and Paula Weinstein (The Perfect Storm, The Fabulous Baker Boys, Analyze This, Analyze That) in recognition of their shared commitment to paving the way for female producers and championing women’s voices in Hollywood.
