38th American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Awards: ‘Oppenheimer’ Wins Feature Film Prize

The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) revealed its 38th Outstanding Achievement Award winners in feature film, documentary, television and music video categories where Hoyte Van Hoytema won theatrical feature film prize for Oppenheimer.

For the first time ever, the ASC and Oscars’ cinematography branch aligned 5/5 with their nominations with El Conde, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, Oppenheimer and Poor Things all up for the cinematography Oscar. Seven of the past 11 ASC winners went on to win the Oscar for best cinematography.

In television, which splits between Half Hour and One Hour programming, the winners included BarryThe Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and The Boston Strangler.

Academy Award-winning director Spike Lee received the Board of Governors Award where he revealed that Maestro DP Matthew Libatique would be the cinematographer on his next film, High and Low, a remake of the 1963 Akira Kurosawa film, and will star Denzel Washington. The film will be produced by A24, Escape Artists and Mandalay Pictures, and be distributed by A24 before a global launch on AppleTV+.

The ASC Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Don Burgess, ASC, the ASC Presidents Award was presented to Amy Vincent, ASC, and the ASC Career Achievement in Television Award was presented to Steven Fierberg, ASC.

The 38th Annual ASC Awards ceremony was held at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills and live streamed worldwide on theasc.com.
