38th International Documentary Association (IDA) awards: ‘All That Breathes’ wins Best Feature; ‘Fire of Love’ takes two prizes

The International Documentary Association (IDA) announced the winners in 18 categories for the 38th IDA Documentary Awards, which were held on Saturday evening at the Paramount Theater on the Paramount Studios Lot in Los Angeles, where Shaunak Sen’s All That Breathes won the top feature award Best Director, Best Editing as well as being the group’s the Pare Lorentz Award winner.

Sara Dosa’s Fire of Love had led the nominations with five and won for Best Cinematography and Best Writing. Shaunak Sen’s All That Breathes was next with four; Best Feature Documentary, Best Director, Best Editing, Best Cinematography plus being announced as the Pare Lorentz Award winner. Joining Fire of Love and All That Breathes in the top category were All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, A House of Made of SplintersKatrina BabiesMijaNavalny, No Simple Way Home, The Pawnshop and Young Plato.

Louis Armstrong’s Black & Blues was named Best Music Documentary.

Television winners included Fannie Lou Hamer’s America, POV and Origins of Hip Hop and We Need to Talk About Cosby.

This year’s shortlists and nominees were selected by independent committees of 310 documentary makers, curators, critics, and industry experts from 52 countries. IDA received 806 submissions in all categories, 40% of which are internationally produced or coproduced projects from 86 countries.

Erik Anderson

Erik Anderson is the founder/owner and Editor-in-Chief of AwardsWatch and has always loved all things Oscar, having watched the Academy Awards since he was in single digits; making lists, rankings and predictions throughout the show. This led him down the path to obsessing about awards. Much later, he found himself in film school and the film forums of GoldDerby, and then migrated over to the former Oscarwatch (now AwardsDaily), before breaking off to create AwardsWatch in 2013. He is a Rotten Tomatoes-approved critic, accredited by the Cannes Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and more, is a member of the International Cinephile Society (ICS), The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (GALECA), Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) and the International Press Academy. Among his many achieved goals with AwardsWatch, he has given a platform to underrepresented writers and critics and supplied them with access to film festivals and the industry and calls the Bay Area his home where he lives with his husband and son.
