Ed Lachman has won the American Society of Cinematographers Award for Theatrical Feature Film for Maria, director Pablo Larraín’s biopic of opera singer Maria Callas played by Angelina Jolie. This is Lachman’s first ASC win in four feature film nominations. He was also nominated for his work on the television miniseries Mildred Pierce and a previous recipient of the Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
Lachman’s win came as a bit of a surprise in what’s already been a wildly unpredictable awards season, besting six fellow nominees including Alice Brooks for Wicked, Stéphane Fontaine for Conclave, Phedon Papamichael for A Complete Unknown and his fellow Oscar nominees Lol Crawley (The Brutalist), Greig Fraser (Dune: Part Two), and Jarin Blaschke (Nosferatu).
The ASC’s Theatrical Feature Film prize winner has gone on to win the Best Cinematography Oscar less than 50% of the time — 18 in 38 years — including Hoyte van Hoytema for Oppenheimer last year.
Jomo Fray won the Spotlight Award for his lensing of the Best Picture Oscar-nominated Nickel Boys and the documentary award went to Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw for Gaucho Gaucho.
In television, winners were Shōgun for the episode “Crimson Sky” from Sam Mccurdy, Sugar for the episode “Starry-Eyed” by Richard Rutkowski and Ripley for the episode “Lucio” by Robert Elswit.
The ASC’s 2025 Board of Governors Award was given to producer and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, and longtime Sidney Lumet collaborator Andrzej Bartkowiak received the Lifetime Achievement Award. Michael Goi, Joan Churchill, John Simmons and Pete Romano also earned honors.
The nominees were slated to be revealed last week, but the announcement was postponed due to the devastating L.A. fires. The ASC Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on February 23 at The Beverly Hilton. hosted by Ed Helms
