39th Spirit Awards Predictions: Will Oscar Nominees Prevail or Will Oscar Snubs Find Love?

The 39th Film Independent Spirit Awards are tomorrow and with one of the least amount of Oscar crossover in quite some time. In the last 10-15 years the Spirit Awards have been a bit of a surprise beacon of eventual Oscar winners and that was even when they still had their show the day before the Academy Awards. This year sees just a handful of Oscar nominees who showed up here first but those are also the most-nominated films here: American Fiction and Past Lives, with five apiece.

In the two acting categories – lead and supporting consisting of 10 nominees – only Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction) in lead and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers) and Sterling K. Brown (American Fiction) in supporting found themselves with Oscar nods. Even with an increase in the budget eligibility (now $28M) that wasn’t enough for higher price tag features like Barbie, Oppenhemier and Maestro.

The Spirit Awards Nominating Committees are comprised of writers, directors, producers, cinematographers, editors, actors, critics, casting directors, film festival programmers and other working film professionals. But once we get to the winner stage it’s open to anyone with a Film Independent membership, often dubbed the ‘Film Twitter’ awards. But even with that moniker the winners are often close to Oscars. In fact, in 39 years only once has a non-Best Picture Oscar nominee beat out an Oscar nominee for Spirit Awards’ Best Feature, when Lulu Wang’s 2019 film The Farewell bested Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story. So is it safe to go with a Best Picture Oscar nominee here at least the closest to it if there aren’t any? You bet. Which would put Past Lives or American Fiction right at the top. I expect Past Lives to triumph here and while American Fiction seems like a very possible runner-up I can’t help but think that the post-Oscar snub popularity of films like May December and All of Us Strangers could be strong pushes for FI voters.

The 39th Film Independent Spirit Awards, hosted by Saturday Night Live alum Aidy Bryant, will take place on Sunday, February 25, 2024. The in-person show, held at the beach in Santa Monica, will be streamed live on the IMDb and Film Independent YouTube channels, and across other social platforms.

Here are my predictions for the 39th Film Independent Spirit Awards for film and television, where I expect Beef, The Last of Us to do well.

Erik Anderson

Erik Anderson is the founder/owner and Editor-in-Chief of AwardsWatch and has always loved all things Oscar, having watched the Academy Awards since he was in single digits; making lists, rankings and predictions throughout the show. This led him down the path to obsessing about awards. Much later, he found himself in film school and the film forums of GoldDerby, and then migrated over to the former Oscarwatch (now AwardsDaily), before breaking off to create AwardsWatch in 2013. He is a Rotten Tomatoes-approved critic, accredited by the Cannes Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and more, is a member of the International Cinephile Society (ICS), The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (GALECA), Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) and the International Press Academy. Among his many achieved goals with AwardsWatch, he has given a platform to underrepresented writers and critics and supplied them with access to film festivals and the industry and calls the Bay Area his home where he lives with his husband and son.
