42nd Telluride Film Festival Brings Steve Jobs, Beasts of No Nation, Carol, Suffragette

Part of the thrill of the Telluride Film Festival is that the quick, four-day fest only announces its lineup the day before the festival itself starts. Granted, because of Toronto and New York (and Cannes earlier in the year) it sometimes has a ‘been there, done that’ feel to it. This year will see world premieres of heavily anticipated fall and winter films including Lenny Abrahamson’s Room, Sarah Gavron’s Suffragette and Davis Guggenheim’s He Named Me Malala. Black Mass continues to make festival waves before its September 18th bow, Warner Brothers is really pushing the film hard this season.

This year will see tributes to Cannes Best Actress winner Rooney Mara (who brings Carol), Academy Award winning director Danny Boyle (who brings Steve Jobs) and documentarian Adam Curtis (who brings Bitter Lake).

One of the more exciting announcements is the debut film the late Sydney Pollack never finished, his Aretha Franklin documentary Amazing Grace (named after Franklin’s best-selling album). The film documents the making of that album but was mired in sound sync issues that were never resolved, until now.

Two winners from this year’s Berlinale show up; Golden Bear winner Taxi from Jafar Panahi and Silver Bear winners Tom Courtenay and Charlotte Rampling in 45 Years Rampling is a Best Actress Oscar hopeful this season.
