48th NAACP Image Award Nominations: The re-Birth of a Nation; Beyoncé and Moonlight Lead

After becoming awards’ season’s pariah, Nate Parker and his The Birth of a Nation had a bit of a re-birth today at the NAACP Image Award nominations. The film earned six mentions, including three for Parker himself.

Birth will have an uphill battle though as it faces major Oscar contender Moonlight, which also earned six nominations, many in the same categories. The Barry Jenkins indie has already grabbed multiple Best Picture wins from critics’ groups, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Toronto and New York Film Critics Online. The two films will compete against Fences, Loving and Hidden Figures in the top film category.

The NAACP Image Awards recognizes achievements by people of color in TV, music, literature and film and honors individuals or groups who promote social justice through creative endeavors.

Beyoncé earned the most nominations of the day, seven, because, Beyoncé. She is up for Entertainer of the Year plus many nods for her epic Lemonade album (which is also up for the Album of the Year Grammy).

Over on television, black-ish, Atlanta, Queen Sugar, and Empire led the way.

“The NAACP is delighted to have a great collaboration with TV One and we look forward to working with them again to create a memorable evening of entertainment celebrating the hard work, perseverance, and achievements of those in our community,” NAACP national board of directors chairman Roslyn M. Brock said in a statement.

NAACP president and CEO Cornell William Brooks added, “The Image Awards is the premier showcase for art and advocacy reflecting the depth and diversity of the African-American experience. It is an American prism through which we see a breadth of culture and color reflected in film, television, music and literature in ways that reveal our shared humanity. At a moment when America is so divided, the Image Awards represents an hour that brings us together.”

Winners will be announced during the live ceremony on Saturday, February 11th, 2017, and is will air on TV One at 9pm EST. It will be hosted by Anthony Anderson.
