57th Grammy Nominations: Not a Lonely World for Sam Smith, Beyoncé Breaks Record
Sam Smith had a good morning today as the Grammy nominations came in and he snagged 6 for his song, “Stay With Me” and for his album In the Lonely Hour, including Album of the Year. He’s also up for Best New Artist, sharing a nomination with Iggy Azalea, Bastille, Brandy Clark and Haim. Beyonce also scored an Album of the Year nomination and her total today (7) pushes her over Dolly Parton as the most Grammy-nominated female artist of all time.
Newcomer Meghan Trainer wasn’t nominated for Best New Artist but she did manage two surprise nominations in Song of the Year and Record of the Year for her hit “All About That Bass.” Sam Smith joins her in both categories there, as does Taylor Swift (“Shake It Off”) and Sia (“Chandelier”). The only non-overlaps in those categories were “Fancy” from Iggy Azalea feat. Charli XCX in ROTY and Hozier’s “Take Me to Church” in SOTY. Curiously missing from either lineup was the Oscar-winning mega-hit “Let It Go” from the movie Frozen. Many expected it to show up in both SOTY and ROTY. The holy trinity of Swift, Smith and Sia also compete against each other in Pop Solo Performance.
