65th GRAMMY Award winners: Beyoncé breaks record, Viola Davis EGOTs, Harry Styles wins Album of the Year

It was a night firsts, history and just falling short as the 65th Grammy Awards found itself with one of the most entertaining, if longest, shows in its history tonight where Beyoncé became the most-awarded Grammy winner of all time, Viola Davis completed her EGOT, Bonnie Raitt shocked with a top win and Harry Styles took home Album of the Year.

With a field-best nine nominations going into tonight’s show, Beyoncé won two awards, Best R&B Song for the single “Cuff It” and Best Electronic/Dance Album for Renaissance, a win that put her over the top for the most Grammy wins of all time (32), surpassing composer George Solti. But once again, for a fifth time, the recording academy stopped short of awarding their winningest performer their top award, Album of the Year. She was previously nominated for Lemonade, her self-titled album, I Am… Sasha Fierce and The Fame Monster (as a featured artist). In all, Beyoncé’s 32 wins come from 88 nominations with just one triumph in a general field category, a Song of the Year win for “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)” in 2010.

That award went to Harry Styles for his third solo album Harry’s House, which also won Best Pop Album. “I think on nights like tonight, it’s important for us to remember that there is no such thing as best in music,” a surprised Styles said in his speech talking about listening to all of the other artists in his category.

Bonnie Raitt, to her own shock and the shock of the near silent crowd, won Song of the Year for “Just Like That,” which chronicles a woman and the man who received her dead son’s heart transplant. Raitt, an industry icon and multi-Grammy winner, bested the likes of Adele, Beyoncé, Harry Styles and more for the award. Raitt is the first solo songwriter to win the Song of the Year Grammy since Amy Winehouse in 2008.

Sam Smith and Kim Petras won the Best Pop Duo or Group award for their #1 hit “Unholy.” Petras, the first openly transgender person to win the pop duo/group Grammy, thanked the late artist Sophie and LGBTQ+ champion Madonna in her Grammy speech.

Other nomination leaders, Adele, Kendrick Lamar and Brandi Carlile, all took home top wins with Carlile besting with three in the rock and Americana categories. Lizzo won Record of the Year and Best Remixed Recording for “About Damn Time.”

Actress and producer Viola Davis became the 18th EGOT winner with her Grammy win for Best Audio Book, Narration, and Storytelling Recording, the audio book of her autobiography “Finding Me.” She won her Emmy for How to Get Away with Murder, her Oscar and her Tonys for King Hedley II and Fences. Davis became the third Black woman to EGOT (after Whoopi Goldberg and Jennifer Hudson) is one of only three to achieve the Triple Crown of acting for her Emmy, Oscar and Tony wins, joining Helen Hayes and Rita Moreno.

The night opened with an on your feet performance by Grammy winner Bad Bunny with “Un Verano Sin Ti” and throughout the evening performances by Brandi Carlile, Lizzo, Steve Lacy, a blistering tribute to 50 years of hip-hop and a very emotional set of performances for the Grammy In Memoriam from Kacey Musgraves, Quavo, Mick Fleetwood, Bonnie Raitt and Sheryl Crow.

The 3h 45m live ceremony was hosted once again by Trevor Noah from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Here is the full list of winners.

Erik Anderson

Erik Anderson is the founder/owner and Editor-in-Chief of AwardsWatch and has always loved all things Oscar, having watched the Academy Awards since he was in single digits; making lists, rankings and predictions throughout the show. This led him down the path to obsessing about awards. Much later, he found himself in film school and the film forums of GoldDerby, and then migrated over to the former Oscarwatch (now AwardsDaily), before breaking off to create AwardsWatch in 2013. He is a Rotten Tomatoes-approved critic, accredited by the Cannes Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and more, is a member of the International Cinephile Society (ICS), The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (GALECA), Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) and the International Press Academy. Among his many achieved goals with AwardsWatch, he has given a platform to underrepresented writers and critics and supplied them with access to film festivals and the industry and calls the Bay Area his home where he lives with his husband and son.
