69th Tony Nominations: Fun Home and American in Paris Lead with 12 Nods Each

Two very different musicals, Fun Home and An American in Paris, lead the Tony nominations with 12 apiece today. Christopher Wheeldon’s adaptation of the classic 1951 Oscar-winning Hollywood film musical earned mentions for Best Musical, Direction, Choreography, and Best Lead Actor in a Musical. Fun Home, based on Alison Bechdel’s Pulitzer-winning autobiographical novel is up for Best Musical, Book, Score, Best Lead Actor in a Musical and Best Lead Actress in a Musical. In the battle of the Hollywood stars at the Tonys, Bradley Cooper bested Jake Gyllenhaal (just as he did with the Oscar nominations this year) with his Best Leading Actor in a Play for The Elephant Man. Gyllenhaal’s Constellations did earn a mention for its Lead Actress, Ruth Wilson. Leading Actress is filled with Oscar and Emmy favorites with Helen Mirren, Elizabeth Moss and Carey Mulligan also getting nominations.

The 69th Annual Tony Awards, presented by The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing, will be broadcast live on CBS June 7 from Radio City Music Hall beginning at 8 PM ET.

Tony winners Kristin Chenoweth (who is also nominated this year) and Alan Cumming will host this year’s ceremony. The full list of nominations below.
