75th ACE Eddie Awards: ‘Emilia Pérez,’ ‘Wicked’ Top Winners for Film Editing

American Cinema Editors (ACE) last night revealed the winners for the 75th Annual ACE Eddie Awards, with surprise wins in the feature film categories where musicals Emilia Pérez and Wicked bested their competition.

It ended in what was the most tumultuous category race of the season, with a different film winning every major precursor all the way up to the Oscars. Challengers won Critics Choice (but was Oscar snubbed), Conclave won BAFTA, Emilia Pérez and Wicked won ACE (in drama and comedy categories, respectively) and Anora won the Oscar. The ACE Eddies recognized outstanding editing in 14 categories of film, television and documentaries. The winners were announced at the live ceremony at UCLA’s Royce Hall on Friday night.

With both presumptive frontrunners, Conclave and Anora, losing here it’s hard to say if it would have had any impact on Oscar voters had the ACE Eddies been a proper chronological precursor. The awards were delayed from their January 18 ceremony due to the L.A. wildfires that halted all events in the city at the time and would have come one day after Oscar nomination voting ended but nearly a month before winner voting began. Ultimately, ACE nominees Anora, Conclave, Emilia Pérez and Wicked were all nominated for the film editing Oscar alongside The Brutalist. For Emilia Pérez, voting on ACE winners came long before the tweetstorm controversy around star Karla Sofía Gascón and stands as one of the very few major guild wins for the film after the late January reveal of her offensive comments.

For animated features, while Flow bested The Wild Robot at the Oscars, the latter was quite the guild champion all season and triumphed here with the win for best animated feature film.

In television, you can only align Emmy wins so far as guilds use a calendar year release vs the Emmy calendar of June 1 – May 31. That didn’t stop Shōgun and Baby Reindeer from repeating their Emmy wins with the same episodes (“A Dream of A Dream” and “Episode 4,” respectively), but in comedy series What We Do in the Shadows was a big upset for The Bear, which had won this ACE category for the last two years in a row.

Wicked filmmaker Jon M. Chu received the ACE Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award, recognizing a filmmaker who exemplifies distinguished achievement in the art and business of film. Film editors Maysie Hoy, ACE and Paul Hirsch, ACE received Career Achievement Awards for their outstanding contributions to film editing.

The show pivoted from a Black-Tie, red carpet event to a “Come as You Are” community-building fundraiser with a portion of ticket sales being donated to LA wildfire relief.

And with that, we close the 2024/2025 film awards season. Here is the full list of winners of the 75th ACE Eddie Awards.
