76th Primetime Emmy Nominations: ‘The Bear’ Breaks Comedy Record, ‘Shōgun’ Tops Drama, ‘True Detective’ Leads Limited Series

The second season of FX’s The Bear made Emmy history this morning, earning 23 nominations, passing the record for a comedy series previously held by 30 Rock with 22 nominations in 2009. The chef show, which just aired its third season, was nominated for Comedy Series, two in Directing, Writing, Lead Acting for Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri and eight other acting nominations among its mentions this morning. Nominations were announced by Emmy winners Tony Hale and Sheryl Lee Ralph, the latter of whom received her third nomination today for Abbott Elementary.

Shōgun leads this year’s Drama categories with 25 nominations, including Drama Series, Directing, Writing, Lead Acting for Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada plus three other acting nods. Earlier this year, FX gave the green light for two more seasons of the feudal Japan series based on the novel by James Clavell, lifting it out of the very crowded limited series field and giving it a berth in drama that paid off handsomely.

That one-two punch, along with big numbers for Fargo and Feud: Capote vs. the Swans, led FX Networks to the most Primetime Emmy nominations in the history of the network with 93. Apple TV+ also landed a record 70 nominations for the streamer with multiple series’ recognized, including The Morning Show, Palm Royale, Lessons in Chemistry and Slow Horses. Netflix led all studios, streamers and networks with 107 nominations, with over 30 individual shows receiving nominations and led by its crown jewel, The Crown, for its final season, and limited series’ Ripley and Baby Reindeer. The streaming giant still holds the record for most nominations in a single year (160 in 2020) and tied for most wins (44 in 2021, alongside CBS in 1974). HBO | Max received 91 nominations across 28 original programs.

The final season of Curb Your Enthusiasm ties the series nomination record of 11, joining Cheers, Law & Order, and M*A*S*H.

All five Outstanding Television Movie nominees – Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie; Quiz Lady; Red, White & Royal Blue; Scoop and Unfrosted – each only earned one single Emmy nomination, only in this category.

“Television delivers stories that connect us, uplift us, challenge us, and always entertain us. Today, I am honored to celebrate the outstanding work of our extraordinarily talented and hardworking creative community,” said Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego, who introduced Hale and Ralph and returned to present the Comedy Series nominees. “This morning’s Emmy nominations are a testament to their contributions and highlight the incredible programming that has risen to the top of an exceptional year in TV.”

The Television Academy’s approximately 24,000 members made their choices from 229 total series’ submitted in the drama, comedy and limited/anthology series categories in 2024, a drop of 33% from last year, due in part to the double strikes that hit Hollywood last summer, lasting through the fall.

There were 36 first-time performer nominees across all performer categories this year and they are Eric André (The Eric Andre Show), Tadanobu Asano (Shōgun), Jonathan Bailey (Fellow Travelers), Nicole Beharie (The Morning Show), Matt Berry (What We Do in the Shadows), Lionel Boyce (The Bear), Néstor Carbonell (Shōgun), Liza ColónZayas (The Bear), Dakota Fanning (Ripley), Richard Gadd (performance, producer and writing nominations for Baby Reindeer), Lily Gladstone (Under the Bridge), Tom Goodman-Hill (Baby Reindeer), Ryan Gosling (Saturday Night Live), Jessica Gunning (Baby Reindeer), John Hawkes (True Detective: Night Country), Takehiro Hira (Shōgun), Tom Hollander (Feud: Capote vs. The Swans), Aja Naomi King (Lessons in Chemistry), Greta Lee (The Morning Show), Tracy Letts (Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty), Jack Lowden (Slow Horses), Lesley Manville (The Crown), Nava Mau (Baby Reindeer), Lamorne Morris (Fargo), Karen Pittman (The Morning Show), Parker Posey (Mr. & Mrs. Smith), Lewis Pullman (Lessons in Chemistry), Da’Vine Joy Randolph (Only Murders in the Building), Kali Reis (True Detective: Night Country), Paul Rudd (performance for Only Murders in the Building and narrator for Secrets of the Octopus), Hiroyuki Sanada (Shōgun), Anna Sawai (Shōgun), Mena Suvari (RZR), Naomi Watts (Feud: Capote vs. The Swans), Dominic West (The Crown) and D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (Reservation Dogs).

In addition to Gadd and Rudd, performers with multiple nominations this year include Quinta Brunson (performance and writing for Abbott Elementary), Jodie Foster (performance and producer for True Detective: Night Country), Donald Glover (performance and writing for Mr. & Mrs. Smith), Jon Hamm (performance for Fargo and The Morning Show), Brie Larson (performance and producer for Lessons in Chemistry), Jonathan Pryce (performance for The Crown and Slow Horses), Maya Rudolph (performance for Loot, performance and music & lyrics for Saturday Night Live, character voice-over for Big Mouth), Andrew Scott (performance and producer for Ripley) and Kristen Wiig (performance for Palm Royale and Saturday Night Live).

Emmy winner voting takes place August 15-25, where individual acting nominees and shows will submit episodes they consider the best of their work that season for voters. The Creative Arts Emmy Awards and Governors Ball events will be September 7 and 8 with an edited version airing on FX Saturday, September 14.

Emmy Award-winning producers Jesse Collins and Dionne Harmon, and Emmy-nominated Jeannae Rouzan-Clay of Jesse Collins Entertainment are set to return as executive producers of the 76th Emmy Awards. This marks their second consecutive year as executive producers of television’s biggest night. The 76th Emmy Awards will air live coast to coast from the Peacock Theater at L.A. in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 15 (8:00-11:00 p.m. ET/5:00-8:00 p.m. PT), on ABC and stream next day on Hulu.
