The 82nd Golden Globe Awards were held tonight where The Brutalist, Emilia Pérez, Shōgun and Hacks topped the winners.
The ceremony was held tonight live at the Beverly Hilton on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+ in the U.S., marking the first major awards televised show of the season and setting up for what could be the crowing of what have been critics’ frontrunners so far or the tide turn to create new ones.
Emilia Pérez led the nominations with 10, breaking the all-time record for a comedy or musical at the Golden Globes, winning four: Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Motion Picture – Non-English Language, Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña and Original Song (“El Mal”).
Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist had the next best with three wins: Motion Picture – Drama, Director, Lead Actor (Adrien Brody). Conclave won a single award, Screenplay, and Flow was named Best Motion Picture – Animated. Kieran Culkin continued his dominance in the supporting actor race with his win tonight for A Real Pain.
Fernanda Torres was the night’s biggest surprise winner for her performance in the Brazilian film I’m Still Here. She is only the second Brazilian actress to be nominated at the Golden Globes, the first being her own mother – Fernanda Montenegro for 1998’s Central Station, who was subsequently Oscar-nominated. Both films were directed by Walter Salles. In the last 30 years, the only performance to win this award and not receive an Oscar nomination was been Kate Winslet for Revolutionary Road, who also won the supporting Globe for The Reader, which won her the Oscar in lead.
In television, Shōgun was the runaway winner with four awards, three of which it repeated from the Emmys last year: Best Television Series – Drama, (Shōgun), Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai for their lead performances. Joining them here was Shōgun supporting actor Tadanobu Asano. Several more Emmy winners from last September were Jodie Foster (True Detective: Night Country), Jean Smart (Hacks) and Jeremy Allen White (The Bear). Hacks also triumphed in Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy. Colin Farrell bested Richard Gadd (Baby Reindeer) for his performance in The Penguin but Reindeer Emmy winner Jessica Gunning won here for her supporting performance.
Comedian Nikki Glaser hosts for the first time, becoming the first solo woman to host the show. Glaser was nominated in the new Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television category but lost to Ali Wong. She began her monologue by calling the awards ceremony “Ozempic’s biggest night,” telling those watching on Paramount+, “You have six days left to cancel your free trial.”
Multi-Emmy Award-winning producing duo Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner of White Cherry Entertainment (WCE) returned as executive producing show-runners.
For the first time, the Golden Globes hosted a separate event to honor the recipients of the Cecil B. DeMille – Viola Davis – and Carol Burnett Award – Ted Danson – at a gala dinner on Friday, January 3. Meryl Streep presented Davis with her award while Danson’s wife Mary Steenburgen presented his at the star-studded event. Danson is nominated this year for Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy for Netflix’s A Man on the Inside.
