91st Oscars: ‘Green Book’ Best Picture; ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ tops with four wins

The race dramedy Green Book has won Best Picture at the 91st Oscars, along with Original Screenplay and Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali. It was only the 5th film ever to win the top Oscars’ prize without a Best Director nomination. The film overcame tremendous controversy and backlash to win the Producers Guild Award last month on its way to the Oscar. The film was not nominated for the SAG Cast award, making it the second film in a row (after The Shape of Water) to buck that previous trend. Green Book also bypassed the Telluride Film Festival (every Best Picture winner for the last 11 years has shown there) instead premiering at Toronto where it won the Audience Award.

“This is like a dream,” said producer Jim Burke, accepting the award with the Green Book cast and team, including Charles B. Wessler, Brian Currie, Peter Farrelly and Nick Vallelonga. “We made this film with love, and we made it with tenderness and we made it with respect.”

Farrelly added, “This whole story is about love. It’s about loving each other despite our differences and finding the truth about who we are; we’re the same people.” Both Villalonga and Farrelly won the Original Screenplay Oscar earlier in the evening.

Queen and Adam Lambert opened the show with a medley and the show, the first to go on without a host in 30 years, moved at a quick clip, clocking in at 3h 20m, the shortest telecast since 2012.

Every Best Picture nominee ended up with at least one award tonight with the Academy spreading the wealth and no film earning more than four. A Star Is Born won Original Song for “Shallow,” BlacKkKlansman claimed Adapted Screenplay, finally making Spike Lee a winner of a competitive Oscar and Vice won Makeup & Hairstyling. Roma took home two awards, both for Alfonso Cuarón. He won Best Director (for a second time) and Best Cinematography in a first for a film’s director. 

The night began with a wealth of celebrated wins and Oscar firsts including Costume Designer Ruth E. Carter and Production Designer Hannah Beachler (both of Black Panther) becoming the first black people to win those Oscars. Beachler was the first black female nominee ever in her category. Regina King won Supporting Actress for If Beale Street Could Talk, bucking the odds after missing out on Screen Actors Guild and BAFTA nominations. 

Bohemian Rhapsody was the top trophy winner of the night with four: both Sound wins, Film Editing and Best Actor for Rami Malek. He became the first winner of Egyptian descent in any acting category. The film won four of its five categories, missing out on Best Picture. 

With The Favourite‘s Olivia Colman winning over Glenn Close in Best Actress, three of the four acting winners won for portraying queer characters, an Oscar record. 

Julia Roberts announced the Best Picture winner, the first female to fly solo since Barbra Streisand in 1991.
