2026 Oscar Predictions: BEST PICTURE and BEST DIRECTOR (August)

This is the last gasp of ‘good on paper’ predictions. Where most films still haven’t been seen but we bank on a director, a cast, a script, something that propels us, compels us, to find a spot for it on our list. Sometimes there’s a test screening that provides some detail, sometimes we ‘hear’ things and often we’re ‘told’ them. But really, nothing matters until we see them and in less than three weeks time the majority of contenders will have screened and we’ll say things like ‘yep, that was top tier all along’ or ‘what were we thinking?’
With that in mind, August’s top 10 sees It Was Just an Accident and The Lost Bus as upwardly mobile with One Battle After Another and Bugonia taking a tumble. A blunder to make big moves on the precipice of knowledge? Perhaps, or maybe it’s precience. We’ll know soon.
Here are my 2026 Oscar nomination predictions in Best Picture and Best Director for August.
