68th Grammy Nominations: Kendrick Lamar Leads with Nine, Bad Bunny Makes Grammy History
Lady Gaga, Sabrina Carpenter and Leon Thomas among top nominations hauls
Kendrick Lamar leads the nominations for the 68th Grammy Awards announced this morning, with nine, including Album of the Year for GNX and both Song and Record of the Year for “Luther.” After winning big last year with “Not Like Us” taking both Record and Song of the Year, Lamar is poised to earn his first AOTY win. With this nominataion, Lamar becomes the first solo artist to be nominated for Album of the Year with five consecutive studio albums.
Bad Bunny made some Grammys history today. His latest album, “Debí Tirar Más Fotos,” and its title track are up for album, song, and record of the year — making him the first Spanish-language artist to land the big three in the same year.
Lady Gaga snagged seven nominations, the most for her in a single year, with her latest album Mayhem and its lead single “Abracadabra,” which showed up in both Song and Record of the Year. Gaga ties for the second-most nominations with producers Jack Antonoff and Cirkut.
Only one Best New Artist nominee was able to crack the top categories this year, a rarity. Leon Thomas grabbed six nominations, with Mutt landing an Album of the Year nod. Elsewhere, his nominations came in the R&B categories where he earned places in R&B Album, R&B Song for “Yes It Is,” R&B Performance for “Mutt (Live From NPR’s Tiny Desk)” and Traditional R&B Performance for “Vibes Don’t Lie.”
Last year’s Best New Artist winner Chappell Roan returned with the single “The Subway,” which is nominated or Record of the Year and Pop Solo Performance. Pop girlie Sabrina Carpenter, who won Best Pop Album last year for Short ‘n Sweet, is back with Album of the Year for Man’s Best Friend and its title single in both Record and Song of the Year and Pop Solo Performance. She is also once again nominated for Pop Album.
Justin Bieber scored a bit of a Grammy comeback this morning with an Album of the Year nomination for Swag, which is also nominated for Pop Album, and its hit single “Daisies” up for Pop Solo Performance.
For the first time this decade, three rap albums nominated for Album of The Year: GNX from Kendrick Lamar, Let God Sort Em Out from Clipse and Chromakopia from Tyler, the Creator.
Two-time Oscar nominee Timothée Chalamet is now a first time Grammy nominee. He is nominated for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media for his singing in last year’s Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown.
The year’s biggest breakout song “Golden,” from the Netflix animated film KPop Demon Hunters had a great morning with four nominations, including Song of the Year, Pop/Duo Performance HUNTR/X: EJAE, Audrey Nuna, Rei Ami and Song Written for Visual Media. The song is a top contender for the Original Song Oscar. Another Oscar song contender, “I Lied to You” from Sinners is also nominated in that latter category with two other songs from that film; “Pale, Pale Moon” and the titular track.
Billie Eilish earns her sixth Song of the Year nomination with “Wildflower.” She’s been nominated every year in this category since 2020, except for 2023, and won twice, for “bad guy” in 2020 and “What Was I Made For?” in 2024. Last year, she lost all seven bids at the Grammys.
Fab Morvan, half of the 1980s duo Milli Vanilli, returned to the Grammys nearly 35 years after winning Best New Artist only to have their Grammy rescinded when it was discovered that he and the now deceased Rob Pilatus, who had # hits like “Girl You Know It’s True,” had lip-synced their songs instead of singing themselves. Morvan is nominated for Best Audio Book, Narration, and Storytelling Recording for You Know It’s True: The Real Story of Milli Vanilli.
The Grammys will return to CBS and Paramount+ on February 1 with a live broadcast and stream starting at 8 p.m. ET/5 PT. Here is the complete list of nominations for the 68th Grammy Awards.
