BAFTA Longlists: ‘One Battle After Another’ Leads With Record 16 Mentions, ‘Hamnet’ and ‘Sinners’ Next with 14 Each
The BAFTA longlists dropped early this morning and Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another has earned 16 mentions across 25 categories — the highest since the longlist round was re-introduced in 2021. Along with best film, director and adapted screenplay, it grabbed five nods on the performance lists, with Chase Infiniti, Leonardo DiCaprio, Teyana Taylor, Benicio Del Toro and Sean Penn all making the cut.
Following very closely were Chloe Zhao’s Hamnet and Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, which earned 14 longlist slots each. Right behind was Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme with 13, Yorgos Lanthimos’ Bugonia and Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein both receiving 12. Although, among those 12 nods for Frankenstein, one of was not for Guillermo del Toro in Best Director. Sentimental Value and Wicked: For Good both grabbed eight spots.Jafar Panahi’s Palme d’Or-winning It Was Just an Accident only managed two longlist mentions, original screenplay and film not in the English language. The Secret Agent made the same lists as It Was Just an Accident, but surprisingly, lead star Wagner Moura was not on the acting list. This mirrors Fernanda Torres last year for I’m Still Here, who won the Golden Globe and was eventually Oscar-nominated. Sirāt, which had been growing in buzz recently, also managed just two, for casting and film in the English language, not even one for sound, where it landed a spot on the Oscar shortlist.
Surprise misses from British films include Urchin (the directorial debut of Harris Dickinson) and My Father’s Shadow, earning just one longlist mention each, the latter of which didn’t even make the outstanding British film list.As with the Oscar shortlists, After the Hunt and The Testament of Ann Lee were completely shut out.
BAFTA nominations will be announced on Jan.uary27 (the Rising Star award nominees will be revealed on January 14) and the BAFTA Film Awards ceremony will take place Feb. 22 at London’s Royal Festival Hall with Alan Cumming hosting for the first time.
