53rd Annie Awards: ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Makes History with Clean Sweep of 10 Wins

Sony Animation and Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters has made a clean sweep of the 53rd Annie Awards tonight, winning all of its 10 nominations, including Best Feature, Best Direction, Best Writing and Best Voice Acting Arden Cho as Rumi.
The other six wins for the film came from Best FX- Feature (Filippo Macari, Nicola Finizio, Simon Corbaux, Naoki Kato, Daniel La Chappelle) Best Character Animation – Feature (Ryusuke Furuya), Best Character Design – Feature (Scott Watanabe, Ami Thompson), Best Music – Feature (KPop Demon Hunters Music Team), Best Production Design – Feature (Helen Chen, Dave Bleich, Wendell Dalit, Scott Watanabe, Celine Kim) and Best Editorial – Feature (KPop Demon Hunters Editorial Team).
While not quite the Annie Awards record (that belongs to 2017’s Coco with 11), its 10 wins puts it in company with How to Train Your Dragon, The Incredibles, Inside Out, Kung Fu Panda, Mulan and Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. It is the only film in Annie history, however, to earn 10 or more nominations and win them all. However, Coco‘s 11 wins came from 13 nominations, two of which had the film competing against itself.
On the flip side, Pixar’s Elio, also nominated for 10 awards, lost all of its bids. As did Zootopia 2 with its seven. Arco took home the Best Independent Feature award. KPop Demon Hunters, Elio, Arco, Little Amélie or the Character of Rain and Zootopia 2 are nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards.
Since the Best Animated Feature Oscar category was began in 2002, 14 of the 23 winners of the Annies’ Best Feature prize went on to win the Academy Award. Just last year, however, The Wild Robot dominated the Annies with nine wins then lost the Oscar to Flow, which did win the Annie for Best Independent Feature as well as Best Writing.
On the TV side, Pixar’s Win or Lose won three of its six nominations, including Best TV/Media – Limited Series, while Netflix’s Love, Death + Robots led with four wins. Adult Swim’s Common Side Effects also nabbed three wins.
Juried Awards were also presented during the ceremony, honoring unparalleled achievement and exceptional contributions to animation. The Winsor McCay Award in recognition of lifetime or career contributions were awarded to three recipients: Internationally lauded Annie Award and Academy Award-winning animator, writer and director Michaël Dudok de Wit; prolific and influential filmmakers and Annie Award and Academy Award winners Chirstopher Miller and Phil Lord; and Annie Award-winning and Academy Award-nominated writer/director Chris Sanders.
Here is the complete list of winners.
