79th BAFTA Film Awards: ‘One Battle After Another’ Takes Best Film, Director; Robert Aramayo Wins Best Actor

Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another was the big winner of the 79th BAFTA Film Awards tonight, with wins for Best Film, Best Director and Adapted Screenplay for Anderson, Best Supporting Actor for Sean Penn, Best Editing and Best Cinematography. The film led the nominations with 14.
The ceremony was held at London’s Royal Festival Hall, with Alan Cumming on hosting duties for the first time, and opened the show highlighting that 2025 was “a great year for daddy issues” in film.
Ryan Coogler’s horror hit Sinners came in with 13 nominations, the highest for any film by a Black director in BAFTA history, and left with three: Original Screenplay, Score and Supporting Actress for Wunmi Mosaku.
The biggest shock of the night came in Best Actor when homegrown talent Robert Aramayo won for I Swear, besting the likes of Timothée Chalamet and Leonardo DiCaprio, making it the first time in 25 years that BAFTA gave the award to a non-Best Actor Oscar nominee. The last was Jamie Bell for 2000’s Billy Elliot. Aramayo was also the recipient of the BAFTA Rising Star Award, which is voted on by the public. I Swear also surprised (somewhat) with the Best Casting win. The award, introduced in 2019, has coincided with an individual acting award in all but one year (2020 when Rocks won but Bukky Backray lost Best Actress).
Best Actress went to Jessie Buckley for Hamnet, making her the first Irish actress ever to win the BAFTA. Buckley is also the only actor this season to potentially make a clean sweep, having already secured Critics Choice and the Golden Globe. Hamnet was also the winner of Best British Film.
This marks first-time BAFTA Film Awards wins for all four performers; a first-time BAFTA Film Awards nomination and win for Ryan Coogler; and a first-time Best Director win for Paul Thomas Anderson.
The supporting wins for Penn and Mosaku provided another piece in the very split puzzle of those races, with a different person winning the precursors so far before the Screen Actors Guild has their say on March 1. In supporting actor, Jacob Elordi (Frankenstein) won Critics Choice while Stellan Skarsgård (Sentimental Value) won the Golden Globe. In supporting actress, Amy Madigan (Weapons) won Critics Choice while Teyana Taylor (One Battle After Another) won the Globe. Madigan was not BAFTA-nominated.
Frankenstein was a triple winner with awards for costume design, make up & hair and production design, three categories its dominated in the guilds so far. F1 pulled out a sound win and Sentimental Value also only managed one, Film Not in the English Language, but is also the first Norwegian film to win a BAFTA.
Marty Supreme‘s loss in Best Actor meant the film went 11-0 today and the only Best Film nominee to not win an award. It ties the BAFTA record for most losses with 1969’s Women in Love and 2004’s Finding Neverland. Both of those films still managed to eke out single Oscar wins; Glenda Jackson for Best Actress and original score, respectively.
My Father’s Shadow won Outstanding Debut for a British Writer, Director or Producer for BAFTA Breakthrough for Akinola Davies Jr. and Wale Davies.
The BAFTA ceremony also hosted a performance of the chart-topping “Golden” from Netflix’s Grammy, Golden Globe and Annie-winning animated film Kpop Demon Hunters, sung by Jae, Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami. The film was ineligible for the BAFTA animation award due to its lack of theatrical screening in the UK. Jessie Ware performed “The Way We Were” during the In Memoriam section.
The BAFTA Fellowship was presented by BAFTA’s President HRH The Prince of Wales, to Dame Donna Langley, in honour of her transformative leadership, sustained commitment to inclusion and pipeline building, and the strength of her relationships with creative partners who bring film and television to life. The BAFTA Fellowship is the highest accolade bestowed by BAFTA in recognition of an individual’s outstanding and exceptional contribution to film, games or television across their career.
Clare Binns, the Creative Director of Picturehouse Cinemas, was awarded the Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema award, for championing diverse and fiercely independent work on big screens around the UK. The award was presented by Emily Watson and Stellan Skarsgård.
