On the Shelf: ‘Killers of the Flower Moon,’ ‘Red Sonja,’ ‘Hail, Caesar!’ in 4K plus ‘The History of Sound’ Arrive on Physical Media releases for the Week of March 23
One of the best films of the decade so far arrives on 4K this week alongside a classic 1980s action flick, and a modern gem from Joel and Ethan Coen; with an underrated 2025 release making its physical media debut. First up is the highly anticipated, 4K Blu-ray release of Killers of the Flower Moon from our friends at the Criterion Collection; the historical epic from Academy Award winning director Martin Scorsese, based on the real life events depicted in David Grann’s best-selling novel. An epic elegy of greed, betrayal, and murder, this true crime tragedy unfolds in 1920s Oklahoma, where the discovery of oil has brought riches and death to many members of the Osage people, mostly by the hands of Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio) and the white members of his family, who run the town. Caught in the middle of this is Mollie Kyle (Lily Gladstone), Ernest’s wife, who slowly awakens to the evil that surrounds her within not just her town, but also within her own home. In what is one of the darkest chapters in American history, Scorsese and company deliver a profound story of love, loss, injustice, and the power of a nation of people that still lives on today, refusing to be defined by the kills that make up the headlines. It’s a stunning achievement that earned ten Oscar nominations, and ranks as yet another masterpiece from Scorsese’s filmography, and a much welcomed 4K addition to the collection. The mythical world of Red Sonja arrives on 4K from Arrow Video. A fierce, fire forged fantasy adventure from director Richard Fleischer (Soylent Green), starring Brigitte Nielsen (Cobra) in her iconic debut as the legendary warrior, joined by Arnold Schwarzenegger at the height of his sword-and-sorcery powers. When her family is slain and her homeland destroyed by the tyrannical Queen Gedren (Sandahl Bergman, Conan the Barbarian), Sonja is chosen by the goddess Scáthach and gifted with extraordinary strength and skill in battle. Sworn to vengeance, she embarks on a perilous quest to stop Gedren from wielding a deadly talisman with the power to annihilate the world. A thrilling tale of high adventure packed with stunning spectacle and steel-clashing action, backed by an epic score by maestro Ennio Morricone, Red Sonja is a bold, larger-than-life epic where destiny finds its way onto your shelf this week.
Next up is from our friends at Shout Select, where Joel and Ethan Coen’s Hail, Caesar! makes its 4K debut with an all-star cast comprised of Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Alden Ehrenreich, Ralph Fiennes, Jonah Hill, Scarlett Johansson, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton, and Channing Tatum. Centered around a studio fixer (Brolin) trying to get the studio’s big star back to set to film an important, highly expensive new picture, Hail, Caesar! has the highest honor of being the last great film directed by the Oscar winning duo. Featuring a hilarious musical number by Tatum, an all-time line reading scene between Fiennes and Ehrenreich, and the signature goofy comedy from the Coens that packs a punch by the end, you’ll want to grab this and see it all over again and be reminded of the Coen Brothers’ greatness.
Last up this week comes the latest release from MUBI, which finds Oliver Hermanus’ tender, lyrical romance The History of Sound making its way to physical media. The film follows the relationship between two men (Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor), who meet in 1917 while attending the New England Conservatory of Music, and travel together after World War I, recording folk songs of their countrymen in rural Maine in the winter of 1920. Debuting at the Cannes Film Festival before heading to the mountains of Telluride last year, The History of Sound was one of the most underrated films of 2025, with our own Erik Anderson calling it “a silver dagger to the heart,” as well as saying the film is “absolutely heartbreaking and beautiful.” A must watch, pick up with the other titles above and below as it’s some of the most tender, romantic filmmaking you will see from a new release in some time.
