2027 Oscar Predictions: SUPPORTING ACTRESS (June)

Like Sandra Hüller, we have another potential contender for a double nomination in Supporting Actress, as the new Oscar rules finally allow for an actor to receive more than one nod in a single category.
Penélope Cruz, already a previous winner in this category (for 2008’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona), has two very strong chances in upcoming films: The Invite (A24) and La bola negra (Netflix). She also might have Bunker, where she co-stars with husband and fellow supporting Oscar winner Javier Bardem, but without a distributor or knowledge of her likely category placement, we’ll stick with the two known quantities, both of which I’ve seen. Her role in The Invite, which comes out June 26, is by far the larger one and a fully fleshed out character in Olivia Wilde’s funny, tight, four-person tell-all dramedy. But in La bola negra, from Cannes Best Director winners Javier Ambrossi and and Javier Calvo (aka Los Javis), Cruz gets two fantastic musical numbers and a short but impactful scene where she gets to utter one of the film’s best lines of dialogue that helps connect the film’s triptych of stories.
When it comes to campaigns, Netflix is obviously the better player here, with two wins in this category (Laura Dern for Marriage Story and Zoe Saldaña for Emilia Pérez). As a fall release, La bola negra might have more of a presence if The Invite is returned to sender and A24 looks elsewhere for a contender in this category, like Havana Rose Liu or Halle Bailey in the now-titled Jesse Eisenberg musical comedy The Debut.
