2017 Oscar Predictions: SOUND EDITING AND SOUND MIXING (June)

The release of the trailer early last month for Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, a film that includes wartime elements and fighting that the Sound Editing category loves and dialogue and music (there is a Destiny’s Child concert in the title’s halftime show) that Sound Mixing nominations are made for, has given the film a #1 debut in both the Sound Editing and Sound Mixing category predictions for next year’s Oscars.
Elsewhere, science fiction and space are going to be big players this year with a new Star Wars film (Rogue One), Passengers and Story of Your Life (now titled Arrived) finding their way on both charts. Although Silence has sat atop the Best Picture and Best Director charts there isn’t as much enthusiasm (so far) for its sound elements with the Gold Rush Gang but then, we still have yet to see or hear a single moving frame of the film so far.
Jason Bourne shows up on both charts as well (albeit at the bottom of both) on the strength of the last Matt Damon-led Bourne outing (The Bourne Ultimatum) winning three Oscars, including the two Sound categories. But that was nine years ago, hence its placement on the charts.
The musical La La Land makes a strong showing in Sound Mixing, as musicals often do with the Oscars. But it’s likely the film will need to be a contender outside of this category to even make it here and the Hudson River plane landing drama Sully finds a place in Sound Editing.
