2017 Oscar Predictions: PRODUCTION DESIGN, COSTUME DESIGN, MAKEUP & HAIRSTYLING (June)

Martin Scorsese’s Silence tops all three of the what used to be called ‘the coffee table’ awards this month – Production Design, Costume Design and Makeup & Hairstyling. It leads its nearest competitors by a healthy margin as the expansive epic is expected to reap double digit nominations next year.
Nate Parker’s slave revolt drama The Birth of a Nation places high in the Production Design and Costume Design category for its period detail as does Woody Allen’s 1930s Hollywood dramedy Café Society. The space dramas Story of Your Life (now Arrived) and Passengers show up in Production Design as the Academy has been very friendly to this genre in this category (see: The Martian, Interstellar, Gravity).
Makeup and Hairstyling is a tougher call since it’s one of those categories that has a qualifying element and bake-off. For now we’re looking at the punk era film How to Talk to Girls at Parties from John Cameron Mitchell and starring Elle Fanning and Nicole Kidman as well as a few Marvel films – Deadpool and Doctor Strange.
