While most of us know of the “Loving v Virginia” story in the United States that challenged the laws against interracial marriage in 1967 (and is the basis for the fall film Loving), many probably don’t know about the story of equal shock and importance to England and South Africa that happened nearly 20 years earlier. A United Kingdom tells the true story of Seretse Khama (played by Selma‘s David Oyelowo), the king of Bechuanaland (modern Botswana), and Ruth Williams (played by Oscar nominee Rosamund Pike, Gone Girl), the London office worker that he married in 1948 in the face of fierce opposition from their families and the British and South African governments.
Directed by Amma Asante (Belle), the film also stars British heavyweights Laura Carmichael (Downton Abbey), Tom Felton (the Harry Potter series) and Jack Davenport (the Pirates of the Caribbean series).
A United Kingdom is currently without US distribution but will hit the Toronto International Film Festival this September.
