2017 Oscar Predictions: BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR (November)
[divider style=”solid” top=”20″ bottom=”20″]
Despite being in a film that has yet to even give us a teaser trailer, Liam Neeson (Silence) remains atop the Best Supporting Actor chart, a surprising feat considering all but one other contender (Stephen McKinley Henderson in Fences, incidentally both Paramount releases) has been seen and reviewed and Neeson still hasn’t been toppled. That still makes his position “good on paper” and could drastically change once the film and his performance are seen.
Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea) holds on to the #2 spot for another month but his place here is still very tenuous. The Academy has not been as kind to young male performers as it has been to young female ones. Just last year, SAG nominee Jacob Tremblay was snubbed for Room when his co-star, Brie Larson, won everything including the Oscar. There are just no guarantees when it comes to young men at the Oscars. Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water) moves up in a big way from #5 last month to the top 3. Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) stays strong at #4 but up in points. With his film doing gangbusters box office in limited release and the belief that awards buzz is focused on Ali (despite four other supporting male performances in his film) he looks stronger by the day.
This bumps Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals) down to #5, his point total chopped in half. Dev Patel (Lion) has gained traction as it seems evident that The Weinstein Company will push him here and not in Lead. The aforementioned Henderson just barely holds on with a single vote and Hugh Grant (Florence Foster Jenkins) returns to the list with a single vote by James.
