2019 Oscar Predictions: MAKEUP & HAIRSTYLING and VISUAL EFFECTS (November)
I should have had The Favourite in the top 3 last month but I’ve rectified that now. There is something almost too simple in the garishness of the Queen Anne’s makeup in the film but I think that the branch will embrace it. Plus, it has some of the best w(h)igs of the year.
I still have Disney’ The Nutcracker and the Four Realms making it in on the sheer volume of its complex makeup and hair compositions even though the film was a critical and box office flop. That rarely comes into play in this category (see: Norbit).
All is True, the new period piece from Kenneth Branagh debuts this month and I’m keeping my eye on Uncle Drew as a potential spoiler here.
Black Panther moves up and if the film is a major contender it will be across the board.
Some movement in Visual Effects with Mary Poppins Returns moving up. The inclusion of classic hand-drawn animation, including hiring old animators who hadn’t worked in decades, it could be a real contender for the win as it merges old and new and pays homage to the original.
The shortlists will tell us a lot. Look for those next month.
Here are my 2019 Oscar predictions in Makeup & Hairstyling and Visual Effects for November 22, 2018.
