‘Black Panther,’ ‘Beale Street’ lead Black Reel Awards nominations
The largest grossing domestic film of the year, Marvel’s Black Panther continued it’s historic run as it shattered the record for most nominations in a single year. Director Ryan Coogler’s cultural touchstone secured 17 nominations to top Tyler Perry’s For Colored Girls’ previous record of 14 from the group.
Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk was next with 14 nominations including Outstanding Motion Picture, Actor (Stephan James), Actress (KiKi Layne) and Supporting Actress (Regina King).
The independent film Jinn, about a young black girl whose mother converts to Islam, made a big showing with six nominations, including Outstanding Independent Feature and Emerging Director for Nijla Mu’min.
The most-nominated person in Black Reel Awards history, Spike Lee is back in the race with his drama, BlackkKlansman which received 11 nominations. Lee’s story spotlighting an African-American detective who infiltrates the Ku Klux Klan received nods for Outstanding Picture, Outstanding Director for Lee, Outstanding Actor (John David Washington), Outstanding Screenplay, Outstanding Ensemble, and Outstanding Score.
“This year has been a revelation as so many talented auteurs and performers have simultaneously emerged expanding the path of many who have come before,” said Black Reel Awards founder Tim Gordon. “It is our hope that the amazing work created by these talented filmmakers and performers serve as both inspiration and imagination for future generations who aspire for excellence.”
The Black Reel Awards is the major fundraiser for the Foundation for the Augmentation of African-Americans in Film (FAAAF) and annually spotlights Black cinematic excellence in films and performances in theatrical, independent, television and world cinema films. Under the leadership of founder, Tim Gordon, the Black Reel Awards’ mission is to annually honor African-Americans in the medium of film.
Established in 2000, The Black Reel Awards were originally conceived as a vehicle to recognize African-American achievement in Hollywood. The vision has been expanded to include cinematic achievement on the small screen as well as the independent filmmaking and world cinema.
The 19th Annual Black Reel Awards winners will be announced on Thursday, February 7, 2019.
