‘Avengers,’ ‘Spider-Man,’ ‘Lost in Space’ top VES visual effects awards
Avengers: Infinity War and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse were the big winners at last night’s 17th Visual Effects Society (VES) awards, each winning four trophies. Avengers took the top award, Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature. The event was hosted by Patton Oswalt, his eighth go round.
That win puts Avengers in clear frontrunner status for the Visual Effects Oscar, especially with no Best Picture nominee in the same category, although that’s been a less consistent precursor than it used to be. Its win here marks the first time (with a bit subjectivity) that a comic book film has won the top prize.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse continues to stop Incredibles 2 (the animated nomination leader here) with top wins here including Outstanding Visual Effects in an Animated Feature and Outstanding Animated Character in an Animated Feature (Miles Morales) and bolsters its place in the Animated Feature Oscar race.
Ready Player One won two awards and First Man won the Supporting Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature.
On the television side, Netflix’s reboot of Lost in Space with four wins and became the first series to win the VES top award for television that isn’t Game of Thrones since 2011.
The Visual Effects Society is comprised of over 400 members in the VFX field across 39 countries.
