‘Black Panther,’ ‘black-ish’ top 50th NAACP Image Award winners; Beyoncé is Entertainer of the Year
Marvel’s Black Panther and ABC’s black-ish, both Disney properties, dominated the 50th NAACP Image Awards last in film and television, respectively. Beyoncé won the Entertainer of the Year award.
The comic book blockbuster and Academy Award Best Picture nominee took home Motion Picture, Actor (Chadwick Boseman), Supporting Actress (Danai Girira) and Supporting Actor (Michael B. Jordan) as well as the Breakthrough award for Letitia Wright.
Annapurna’s If Beale Street Could Talk from Barry Jenkins won Outstanding Independent Motion Picture.
The ceremony took place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Saturday night, with black-ish actor Anthony Anderson hosting the live broadcast on TV One.
Along with its Outstanding Comedy Series win, black-ish swept all four acting acting categories plus a second win for Marsai Martin for youth performance for a total of six wins.
The drama categories were won by Power (Drama Series), Taraji P. Henson for Best Actress (Empire) and Omari Hardwick for Best Actor (Power).
Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-Los Angeles) was honored with the NAACP Chairman’s Award.
“After a long career journey, tonight I stand before you as the first woman and the first African-American to chair the powerful U.S. House Financial Services Committee,” she said. “Yes, I got the gavel and I’m not afraid to use it.”
Shawn Carter, aka Jay-Z, received the org’s President’s Award for distinguished public service. He dedicated his award to the “beautiful women” in his life, including his grandmother.
“I grew up believing I could do anything, that I could accomplish anything because of those strong women in my house,” he said.
Presenter Chris Rock made waves by taking shots at Jussie Smollett, just days after Chicago prosecutors dropped all 16 indictments on the Image Award-nominated actor surrounding his alleged assault. “What the hell was he thinking?” the comedian said. “You don’t get no respect from me.”
In the music categories Black Panther was also a big winner, as was newcomer Ella Mai, taking Outstanding Album, Contemporary Song and New Artist.
