2019 BET Awards: Full list of winners, including Cardi B, Beyoncé and Nipsey Hussle
Cardi B opened up the 2019 BET Awards with a dual performance of “Press” and “Clout” alongside her boyfriend Offset. The rapper entered the night with the most nominations with seven, and came away with wins for Female Hip Hop Artist, an Album of the Year win for her 2018 debut Invasion of Privacy. The BET Awards recognize winners across 20 categories in a “celebration of black culture.”
The ceremony also featured live performances from Migos, Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus, DJ Khaled, Lizzo, Mustard, H.E.R., Lil Baby, City Girls’ Yung Miami, Lucky Daye and Kiana Lede, among others.
Regina Hall hosted the 19th annual ceremony in Los Angeles and her intro was a spot-on parody of Beyoncé’s Netflix documentary Homecoming, which detailed her legendary 2018 performance at Coachella. Later in the evening Beyoncé would win Best Female R&B/Pop artist for the sixth year in a row, extending her record as the most-awarded artist in the show’s history.
On the film side, Regina King followed up her Oscar win for If Beale Street Could Talk with a Best Actress win here. Michael B. Jordan was named Best Actor and Spike Lee’s Oscar-winner BlacKkKlansman was named Best Movie.
Tyler Perry was given the Ultimate Icon Award and gave a stirring speech, which brought the audience at the Microsoft Theater to their feet: “When I started hiring people like Taraji, and Viola Davis, and Idris Elba…they couldn’t get jobs in this town,” Perry said. “God blessed me to be in a position to be able to hire them. I was trying to help somebody cross. When I built my studio, I built it in a neighborhood that is one of the poorest black neighborhoods in Atlanta so that young black kids could see that a black man did that, and they can do it too. I was trying to help somebody cross. The studio was once a Confederate Army base — and I want you to hear this — which meant that there were Confederate soldiers on that base, plotting and planning on how to keep 3.9 million Negroes enslaved. Now that land is owned by one Negro.”
Mary J. Blige performed a medley of her hits after receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award. Grammy-nominated rapper, entrepreneur and community activist Nipsey Hussle was honored posthumously with the Humanitarian Award and also won the Male Hip Hop Artist award.
T.I. introduced the award, describing Hussle as “more than a rapper, a teacher, an activist and a philanthropist. He was a revolutionary,” T.I. said. “His emphasis on the power of equity and ownership of our art led the charge of independence and created the blueprint of up-and-coming artists today to follow.”
