Fueled with determination and a passion for science, a bright young girl named Fei Fei (Cathy Ang) builds a rocket ship to the moon to prove the existence of a legendary Moon Goddess Chang’e. There she ends up on an unexpected quest, and discovers a whimsical land of fantastical creatures.
Featuring a phenomenal all-star cast including: Grammy winner and Tony Award nominee Phillipa Soo (Chang’e), Robert G. Chiu (Chin), Ken Jeong (Gobi), John Cho (Dad), Ruthie Ann Miles (Mom), Emmy nominee Margaret Cho (Auntie Ling), 3-time Screen Actors Guild award winner Kimiko Glenn (Auntie Mei), Artt Butler (Uncle), and 12-time Emmy nominee Sandra Oh (Mrs. Zhong).
The original score is composed by Oscar winner Steven Price (Gravity) and features original songs by Christopher Curtis (Chaplin), Marjorie Duffield and Helen Park (KPOP).
Over the Moon is directed by animation legend Academy Award winner Glen Keane (Dear Basketball) from a script by the late Audrey Wells (The Hate U Give) and produced by Gennie Rim (Dear Basketball) and Peilin Chou (Abominable). It is executive produced by Janet Yang (The Joy Luck Club), Glen Keane, Ruigang Li, Frank Zhu and Thomas Hui.
Renowned fashion designer Guo Pei — who famously designed Rihanna’s yellow Met Gala dress in 2015 — created the costume designs for Chang’e. Over the Moon is her first experience working with animation.
“Every child grows up in China knowing the tale of Chang’e and believing that she lives on the moon. There is even a national holiday centered around it — the Mid-Autumn Festival,” says Chou. “Janet came up with the idea to tell a modern day version of this legend through the eyes of a little girl named Fei Fei. I loved the idea of bringing the tale of Chang’e to a global audience in a contemporary, fresh and unique way. Our film features a Chang’e that you have never seen before.”
Netflix will release Over the Moon globally on October 23.
