2021 BAFTA Awards: Night One – ‘Ma Rainey,’ ‘Mank,’ ‘Tenet’ and ‘Sound of Metal’ take the lead
Night one of the two-part 2021 BAFTA Awards were held this evening in London where Oscar nominees Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Mank, Tenet and Sound of Metal kicked off the weekend.
Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom won both of its awards, Make Up & Hair and Costume Design. It has now won all major precursors in those categories going into the Oscars. Mank, also from Netflix, took home the Production Design honors while Warner Bros’ Tenet won Visual Effects and Amazon’s Sound of Metal won Sound. The awards kicked off with the British film Rocks winning Casting, beating out Promising Young Woman, Minari and Judas and the Black Messiah.
The show was hosted by British radio and television presenter Clara Amfo, who was joined by guests Rhianna Dhillon and Joanna Scanlan, from the Royal Albert Hall. In the intimate setting, the three made the winner reveals conversational and informative, offering both details and opinions of each nominee Along with the eight BAFTA winners revealed this evening was a presentation of the nominated films, including behind-the-scenes footage highlighting the creative process. Noel Clarke received the Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema award and will be the only in-person awards moment of the night.
The night also featured a live performance by supporting actor nominee Leslie Odom Jr., who will be singing his Oscar-nominated song “Speak Now” from the film One Night in Miami and Hussain Manawer (Mogul Mowgli) performed a spoken word poem called “Moving Image” that namechecked all 58 nominated films at the BAFTAs.
The 2021 EE BAFTA Film Awards Night Two will air live at 7pm GMT on BBC One on Sunday, April 11 and will also be broadcast live in the US on BBC America.
