‘The Power of the Dog,’ ‘West Side Story,’ ‘Succession’ top 79th Golden Globe Awards winners

If the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the Golden Globes in closed ceremony, and there’s no one around to see it, did it even happen?

“The Golden Globes are a bridge to a world audience of many colors, many faiths, and many cultures, all united with the same passion – a love of movies,” said Helen Hoehne, President of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, opening the private event, which was closed off to media and guests outside of the presenters. It capped off a long battle the HFPA has gone through as its legitimacy as an organization was called into question both for its ongoing questionable practices of accepting extravagant gifts from studios and talent to the revelation by the L.A. Times that the org had no Black members. NBC pulled the plug on hosting a telecast of the show, which kicked off a yearlong effort to reevaluate and restructure its bylaws, including adding 21 new members and a new board of directors. Jamie Lee Curtis, the only celebrity to participate in the ceremony, appeared in a pre-recorded video in which she lauded the HFPA’s philanthropic efforts throughout the year. Throughout the event the HFPA mentioned the groups they work with including St. Elmo Village, Get Lit, Las Fotos, Streetlights and more. Representatives from the various organizations presented this year’s awards.

Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog was named Best Picture, Drama by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association tonight, who put on a private, non-livestreamed ceremony of their 79th annual Golden Globe Awards. Campion was also named Best Director for the film and Kodi Smit-McPhee won Supporting Actor. Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story also won three top awards: Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy plus lead actress in a musical or comedy for Rachel Zegler and Supporting Actress for Ariana DeBose. Belfast, which received seven nominations (the same as The Power of the Dog) won just Screenplay, losing all six other bids.

Nicole Kidman won Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama for her role as Lucille Ball in Aaron Sorkin’s Being the Ricardos. It was her 5th career win across 17 nominations in film and television as both an actress and a producer. Will Smith won Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama as the father of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams in King Richard.

While this year’s Golden Globes might have less impact on the Oscar race than at any time in their 79-year history, they’re still a part of the awards ecosystem, even if just a microcosm this time around.

The third season of Succession led the TV nominations with five nods: Best Television Series – Drama and four acting nominations. It won Series, Actor for Jeremy Strong and Supporting Actress for Sarah Snook. O Yeong-su from the breakout Netflix hit Squid Game won Supporting Actor. Kate Winslet won Actress in a Limited Series for Mare of Easttown while The Underground Railroad won the top Limited Series award. Hacks won both Comedy Series and Actress (Jean Smart).
