‘Abbott Elementary’ sweeps 2022 TCA Awards with four prizes, Mandy Moore wins individual achievement in drama

Abbott Elementary, ABC’s breakout freshman show, has swept the 2022 Television Critics Association (TCA) Awards, taking four wins of its five nominations, in a virtual ceremony held today in Los Angeles.

The seven-time Emmy nominated series took Program of the Year, Outstanding New Program, Outstanding Achievement in Comedy, and Individual Achievement in Comedy for series creator and star Quinta Brunson. Co-star Janelle James was also nominated for Individual Achievement in Comedy.

Melanie McFarland, TCA President and TV Critic for Salon, said, “Tonight was supposed to be our first time celebrating the TCA Awards in-person since 2019—unfortunately, it was not meant to be. Despite this development, we are proud to announce this year’s roster of talented TCA Award winners. Each of them played a vital role in making the 2021-2022 television season one of the best in recent memory. We sincerely congratulate all of our honorees, and we look forward to gathering in person once again in 2023.”

HBO’s third season of Succession won for Achievement in Drama (its second win in this category) while Hulu’s opioid crisis limited series Dopesick won the Movies, Miniseries or Specials category. In a slightly surprising turn, Mandy Moore (This Is Us) bested a lineup entirely of nine current Emmy nominees to triumph in Individual Achievement in Drama for her show’s final season. It was her first nomination of the six season run of This Is Us.

Peter Jackson’s The Beatles: Get Back from Disney+ won the News and Information award and their was a tie in Reality Programming with CBS’s 34th season of The Amazing Race and HBO Max’s third season of Legendary sharing that prize.

The Career Achievement Award was also a tie, with both Ted Danson and Steve Martin being named to a long list of historic television contributors. I Love Lucy won the group’s Heritage Award, an honor given to a classic television program.
