Alliance of Women Film Journalists (AWFJ) Winners

The Alliance of Women Film Journalists (AWFJ) have chosen The Shape of Water as the best film of 2017. They also awarded the film their Best Director prize over their sole female nominee, Greta Gerwig). Gerwig was given the group’s Best Woman Director and Woman Screenwriter awards for Lady Bird.

 

Nomination leader Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri managed just a single win, Frances McDormand for Best Actress. Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour) picked up another Best Actor win and Jordan Peele (Get Out) earned their Original Screenplay award. Call Me By Your Name was their Adapted Screenplay winner. The Florida Project was a double winner; Willem Dafoe for Supporting Actor and Brooklynn Prince for Breakthrough Performance.

“This year was an important year for women to feel empowered to speak out and be heard,” states EDA AWARDS and AWFJ founder and film critic Jennifer Merin.  “The need for gender parity and gender diversity in the movie industry is patently clear, and the time to stop sexual harassment in all industries is now.  These goals are fundamental to AWFJ’s mission and it’s core values. I am thrilled that for this year’s awards, our AWFJ members voted to honor such a diverse array of talent and to recognize those who are leading with their voices to put an end to long time misconduct making the 2017 EDA Awards particularly relevant when art and film must be the vanguard of social progress.”

The EDAs are named in honor of AWFJ founder Jennifer Merin’s mother, Eda Reiss Merin, a stage, film and screen actress whose career spanned more than 60 years. A dedicated foot soldier in the industry, Eda was one of the founders of AFTRA and a long standing member of AMPAS.
