American Factory, Apollo 11 and Honeyland led the 2019 Independent Documentary Association (IDA) nominations today with a strong showing also coming from The Biggest Little Farm, Sea of Shadows and The Edge of Democracy.
This year, the IDA received 785 submissions including 375 documentary features, 153 documentary shorts, 124 documentary series, 89 student films, 48 music documentaries and 44 podcasts with 40% of submissions being international productions or co-productions.
“The IDA Documentary Awards recognizes excellence in nonfiction storytelling across a range of forms, and all of this year’s nominees and winners illustrate that documentary storytelling is one of the most vital art forms today,” said Simon Kilmurry, executive director of the IDA.
For the first time, the IDA has added a Best Director award, which includes nominees Petra Costa (The Edge of Democracy), Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert (American Factory), Tamara Kotevska and Ljubomir Stefanov (Honeyland), and Waad al-Kateab and Edward Watts (For Sama).
“With the addition of the Best Director Award, the IDA is making an important statement. We felt the need to more clearly acknowledge the creativity and bold directorial vision that is behind many of the films we are privileged to consider. We hope that this award recognizes the fact that documentary directing is a vital and unique art form,” he added.
The 2019 IDA Documentary Awards will take place on December 7th at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles.

Erik Anderson is the founder/owner and Editor-in-Chief of AwardsWatch and has always loved all things Oscar, having watched the Academy Awards since he was in single digits; making lists, rankings and predictions throughout the show. This led him down the path to obsessing about awards. Much later, he found himself in film school and the film forums of GoldDerby, and then migrated over to the former Oscarwatch (now AwardsDaily), before breaking off to create AwardsWatch in 2013.
He is a Rotten Tomatoes-approved critic, accredited by the Cannes Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and more, is a member of the International Cinephile Society (ICS), The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (GALECA), Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) and the International Press Academy. Among his many achieved goals with AwardsWatch, he has given a platform to underrepresented writers and critics and supplied them with access to film festivals and the industry and calls the Bay Area his home where he lives with his husband and son.
