American Sniper takes aim at the competition for the Cinema Audio Society nominations

The Cinema Audio Society has announced nominees in six categories, two for film and four for television for their 51st Annual CAS Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing for 2014.

“This year’s nominations reflect the outstanding sound mixing being done in both film and television as determined by the voting members of the Cinema Audio Society,” said CAS president David Fluhr. “I congratulate each of the nominees on a job well-mixed.”

The CAS is often a good bellwether for Oscars Sound Mixing category but seeing films like Into the Woods and Whiplash not show up here does give one pause. Not that there is always a 5/5 crossover but Interstellar still managing to hit here in spite of the complaints of the sound mix is interesting. Birdman‘s inclusion really gives it a push for an Oscar nom here and the sound mix is indeed a complicated and rich one. I can easily see it showing up among AMPAS’s top 5. Guardians of the Galaxy continues to perform well with the tech guilds and should show a healthy nom total on Thursday morning. And Unbroken, despite what looks to be a misfire for above the line Oscar noms, should also perform well with the techs, including this one.
