CORPUS CHRISTI
MARTIN EDEN

A trio of films – Another Round, Corpus Christi and Martin Eden – led the 33rd European Film Awards nominations today with four apiece. The shortlists for nominations were released in August.

Another Round was nominated for European Film, Director (Thomas Vinterberg), Actor for Mads Mikkelsen, and Screenwriter for Vinterberg and Tobias Lindholm. The film won the Audience Award at London Film Festival, and Best Actor at San Sebastian, which was shared by the film’s four leads. The film is set for release in the US by Samuel Goldwyn Films. The Oscar-nominated Corpus Christi landed nominations for European Film, Director (Jan Komasa), Actor for Bartosz Bielenia, and Screenwriter for Mateusz Pacewicz. Read our review here. The film was released in the US in February 2020 and is currently available to rent, stream or buy on demand. Read our review here.

Martin Eden earned nominations for European Film, as well as Director (Pietro Marcello), Actor for Luca Marinelli (who won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at Venice last year), and Screenwriter for Marcello and Maurizio Braucci. Kino Lorber handled the film’s October 16 US release. Read our review here.

Christian Petzold’s Undine was nominated for two awards, European Film and European Actress for Paula Beer, who won the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival.

Three directors landed in the European Director category despite their films not showing up in the top category: Agnieszka Holland for Charlatan, Maria Sødahl for Hope and François Ozon for Summer of 85. For Charlatan and Summer of 85 it was their film’s only nominations. On the flip side, the controversial film The Painted Bird earned a nomination for European Film, its only mention.

The European Film Academy’s 3800+ members will vote for the winners, which will be presented in a series of virtual events from December 8 to 12.
